Raheem Sterling - 2016/17 performances

His first few months this season were miles better than anything he produced that season. Consistency has been a struggle, but then again, what young wide player is actually consistent?

People are saying he is close to world class and will be world class. World class players don't struggle with consistency to the levels he does. He's in his 20s now with 150ish senior club appearances and over 20 international caps, at what point is he no longer given the protection of "he's young and will get better"?

Regardless of how many games he's played, hes still a young player. There is not a SINGLE consistent 22 year old attacker out there.

Sterling's pace, dribbling ability and off-the-ball movement is all different class, but the lad just isn't a good finisher.

He doesn't strike you with confidence when he's in front of goal and should have scored a hell of a lot more goals this season.

Good summary. I'd add that the two elements of his game that need improving are his decision making, which needs to be quicker, and his finishing. If I were Pep, I'd be having him do sessions purely focused on finishing until it becomes instinctive. Currently taking a touch too many every time.

I honestly don't think Sterling has the mental strength to become a top player. A shame because he has technical ability but when the going gets tough he hides. Maybe he can partly overcome this but I can never see him as a top player. I really hope I'm wrong but I just don't think he's mentally tough enough.

When has he hidden? Did he hide today when things got tough? No he kept going and kept going until they had to foul to bring him down and risk getting sent off to stop him.

Accuse him of not finishing well, fine.

Inventing some shit about him hiding is appalling from our own fans.

I don't want to get into Sterling bashing but he got into so many good positions today but he didn't do the right thing in any of them; in the first half he had a one on one but didn't do the right thing - he got pushed wide whereas he should have gotten himself between the ball and the defender and gone for goal - and got a shot away or at least drawn a foul. In the second half when he got bundled over - he should have already got his shot away - but he dallied. He was unlucky in the incident where Walker fouled him. He's not without ability - he has bags of talent but he needs to start having an impact on games - he's a £50 m player.

He didn't hide though did he? That was just bullshit.

If the ref just had done his job and called the pen this thread would have been full of praise again. Instead we dropped points and then some clueless fans are here blaming Sterling despite he's maybe been our best player this season. Sorry but I just get the feeling you've been waiting for an opportunity to slag him off. Origamininja is the only one (as far as I can remember) that has been critical of him all season but the rest of you just seems to want a scapegoat. I'm a bit drunk so sorry in advance if I'm hard to understand but i just think Sterlings been brilliant all season, was decent today and doesn't deserve the criticism he's getting from OUR fans. Just seems strange to me.

In old school talk needs to put his laces through it first time, then all these penalty shouts wouldn't be happening.
It dosnt help his cause as he is known to referees as a player who goes down easily

Playing his way to a period on the bench. He is great at getting into the offensive positions but whether lack of confidence or technique, he doesn,t convert as many as he should. Pep has acknowledged that we are failing to take the chances we create, so if Jesus shows his ability, Sterling will struggle to oust him or Sane.

sterling lack of killer instinct and not clinical enough.
but he still young, hopefully he will improve in his shooting and finishing.

Quality performer right now in terms of effort, movement, teamwork, etc.

He's getting to a point where there is so much right with his game. If he can learn to finish he could become a great for MCFC.

I think it's telling that in 30+ yards he still hadn't really managed to set the ball properly onto his stronger right foot, which is why the little nudge was enough to inbalance him to be unable to shoot properly. If he's approached it right I'm convinced he still gets his laces through that.

I'm not here to bash him, I done that last year when he was shite and he has improved greatly this year (which proves my point he was bad last year)

What I find frustrating is how shite he is in front of goal. If I was as bad as him I'd be working my bollocks off in training, extra drills afterwards to improve. Now someone I'm sure will say how do you know he doesn't do that, well if he does he won't improve will he because he's getting worse. His decision making in front of goal is wank. He slows down and doesn't know what to do, yes on occasions he's fouled but that's not from predicting he will be, it's from taking far too long. He's not clinical enough.

Whilst he has improved if he can't get better at these kind of things I can't see him becoming a world beater.
