It's China, always was always will be.

Because the anti communist west supported it against communist china doesn't change that. It was never a separate sovereign state. Always part of China. It's a political 20th century creation.

I don't see how we can see it any other way like it or not.
Not altogether true mate

In what sense? That it was part of China? That it survived through US support?
Agreee that it's had massive US support but it was colonised by the chinese, it's also been under Japanese rule for a while and the natives feel very much in favour of not being Chinese, just curious if the west should support them or not

It has been invaded and ruled by others. That doesn't mean it's not China. It means it was invaded. The Chinese nationalist fled there, changed it's status unilaterally and America picked up the tab.

It's still China though and the west cannot defend a position that denies that. They will need to sort it out themselves. Chinese to Chinese. Unless they changed the language too that is.

That's not true. The Taiwanese are Chinese. It is the only remaining part of the former Republic of China that lost the majority of its territory to Mao's communists in 1949. They just don't want to be ruled by the PRC and they believe in reunification but not with the Communist party being in power.

So Honk Kong too then?

Fair enough, I wasn't trying to start an argument, genuinly curious if the west should support them or not, you obviously know more about it than I do

I suspect there wouldn't be an option to do so.

If China decide to go in, it will be so heavyhandedly that significant opposition would have to already be there. See the Crimea for similar details.

The west has traditionally supported Taiwan since the conclusion of the Chinese civil war. The PRC was formally allied with the USSR in the early part of the cold war hence the western support for Taiwan. Although China and the USSR went their separate ways in the 1950s, ideologically the west was always closer to Taiwan.

Taiwan has a very strong military in relation to its size and although if China wanted to invade they could obviously take it over, it would be at enormous cost.

I assumed Taiwan would have given their situation.

Sadly, I don't think the cost in Chinese lives would feature highly on China's list of important factors if it got to that point - they'd just do it and lie to their people.

the area was a war zone ,it wasn't Chinas anymore, the USA restored peace and then maintained its military presence
it would be far different from say the Crimea, if China made a move ,the USA would react

I saw a report today that CBS* had footage of Trump having taken a cheer squad to Langley.
The top CIA bods sat listening and all turn to the whooping cheering bunch to one side.
I can't imagine that this really impressed the CIA - neither can I imagine the CIA heads whooping at anything much.

*I don't know if CBS are part of the leftie pinko commie liberal alliance against alternative facts.
