I agree that they can be quite disgusting. If I haven't showered for a couple of days I like to twist certain parts of my beard and then give my fingers a sniff the closer to my mouth I get the more interesting the smell and flavour.

I find that now I've put on a bit of weight a beard is essential in hiding that extra bit of chinidge.
