“City in crisis”

Sick of reading that City could go on a 30 game winning run etc. That’s complete fantasy at the moment.

The fact is the current team structure doesn’t work without Rodri - and there is nothing Pep can do to change it with the current squad - especially with our Dads army midfield.

We average 1.9 points per game in the 20 odd PL games without Rodri ( and most of those games have been when we don’t have other injuries ).

You don’t need to be a mathematical genius to work out that means it’s gonna be a challenge to get in the top 4 unless signings arrive early January. And i don’t mean Echeverri who will need to go to Girona or somewhere on loan.
With a 1.9 average that would mean a final total of 72 points.

The average needed for 4th since the start of the Premier League is 67, and in the last 6 years is slightly less at 65.

The average needed for 3rd since the start of Premier League is 69 and is the same for last 6 years.

We would struggle for 2nd, needing 73 (or 74)

IIRC Palmer wanted out in the same window as we signed Nunes and Doku. If either were signed before Palmer left than I can understand why Palmer was uncommitted as he was, and still is, a far better player than either of them.
I also think he'd offer more goals and assists than Grealish, but Palmer wasn't at that level at the time we signed Grealish.
However it's important to accept even our squad players should be capable of looking decent against Sporting.
The Palmer that left us was nowhere near Doku's level.

We got 40m plus for Palmer and at that time if looked a superb deal for US.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, nobody not even Palmer or Chelsea thought he would be anywhere near the player he has become.

Don’t understand why anybody tries to defend the decision to let Palmer go.

He wanted to go because of limited chances and he knew his talent. Hindsight is a great thing but we lost a generational talent and are left with multiple forward players that can’t score.

Palmer has 29 league goals since he left - Doku and Grealish have 7 league goals combined in the same period.

Lots of factors but it’s proven to be a disastrous fuck up to let him go at a time when there were poor incoming tfrs.

I think with Palmer, we have to take into account that he’s playing for a team where he’s given the freedom as the creative focal point to do whatever he wants and for a team who often get easier chances on the break than for a side like City who have to play patiently.

Give Foden that freedom in a team who doesn’t have to break down buses every week and he’d look like Lionel Messi.

As I mentioned we were getting 1.9 average in a lot of games when we had a full squad minus Rodri. Not the mess we have at the moment.

We also had a squad where multiple players were contributing goals to make up for Rodri’s absence. Doku Grealish Foden Nunes Savinho Bernado have 1 league goal between them and we are more than a quarter through the season.

Not sure how many examples Txiki needed to see to realise we are average without Rodri and needed a quality backup - we collapsed in games when we were 3-0 up when he was subbed late on the game.

Not arguing we need a backup and I was surprised we let Lavia go as I thought he was looking good for that role.

I think even with all the current injuries we are still better than average, but clearly not good enough for the title. But it's still early in the season and we are having a blip, time will tell if it'll cost us or not.

Agree.
It's not for us fans to evaluate City's young talent. We've all seen him 4 or 5 times in lesser games and that's it.
The coaches and manager have years of watching and evaluating Palmer.
I'd no idea how good he was, how could I.

Obviously talent evaluation is the hardest thing in football and we've been brilliant at it since Pep arrived. But this one was a fuck up. It happens all the time but there's no point saying it was anything but a fuck up

2 points off the top, averaging 2.3 points per game, top scorers. Carry on dooming, and wallowing in misery.

Get yer head back in the sand.

Agree, and there's no guarantee he'll maintain this form.
