I don't follow?

His numbers were questioned and criticised.....so how else can his contribution be explained to someone who is blind to his play?
 
He is most effective in the middle but it does not necessarily mean he has to play as an 8.

When at Villa and England the left back or the striker (Watkins can rotate to left wing position occasionally) can hold the width to allow him roam inside.

Similar to what we saw recently in some games Mahrez or Foden came inside when Walker provided width.

We need to spend on one or two fullbacks this summer.

As stated......It was a simple yet factual way to explain his contribution,and it does it very well.

In this context.....i really don't get your point.or your horror at using the term to provide an understanding.
 
Mentioned this loads back, but the most important stat to look at when judging playmakers is Shot Creating Actions per 90.

This is an all encompassing playmaking stat for the BIG DIRECT playmakers (Kevin) and the more subtle ones (David Silva).

Basically it's simple, is what your doing causing the team to shoot the ball, that's playmaking in a general sense.

Here's our team in all comps:

Ignore Perrone as an outlier currently with barely any minutes, and you can see the clear distinction for who makes our team get chances to shoot (Kevin, Riyad, Foden and Grealish).

And the only reason Foden just edged Grealish here is due to his most recent game where he had 7 keypasses.


So in Grealish's own special way, he is "playmaking" more than enough for this squad and is in line with our elite bar Kevin who is an anomoly of a playmaker (as was David).

Now in terms of goals, no argument from me there, he can do better.

The main issue here is that how do you play Phil, Grealish and Mahrez? We seem utterly reliant on the wingers to create our chances, with Kevin the only one in the middle. Gundogan and Bernie are "okay" in this department, but could be a consequence of our playstyle as well.
 
Jack has earnt his starting place, keeps and uses the ball brilliantly, never loses it, and is always involved, the perfect pep player, obviously could do with a few more goals, but you could level that at a couple of players

Because Foden KDB and Mahrez are regular set piece taker. And set piece is a juicy way to get keypass assist or SCA status.

If you look at open play playmaking status, only KDB is more than Grealish.

I've had that guy set to ignore for a while. You arent wrong.

And while use of stats does need to be provided with context (Robbie Savage covered the entire pitch but did fuck all in the 90s), I'll take analytics every day over some anorak saying "he's got a cracking left peg to get it in the mixer".

Grealish has been great in drawing players out of space in order to generate better passing channels. And ive said on here before, if we scored assists like they do in ice hockey (pre assist also scored as an assist) I'd be curious to see his numbers.

I was not having a go at Jackie boy, so chill and relax.

Just the justification of the ridiculous stat of "pre assists", far too much American bullshit coming into our sport in terms of stats.

Grealish is our best player this year but for me is not and never be a wide player in a title chasing side.

He should be in midfield and would be far better and superb in there.

How is that bullshit? It's part of analyzing his play. And it's not even an advanced metric at that...there are plenty of other deeper metrics that indicate a players value to the outcome. You know that Keeper...

Yep, David Silva was said to be vastly underrated according to many blues for always being the pass before the assist, that non-City fans wouldn't pick up on. Along with his dictating of the tempo, ball retention etc.

I just don't think some people like so much focus on the stats, which is fair enough. They rarely tell the whole story. Not sure why that stat should be seen as any less valuable than some of the others, though.

Eyes are the best things that show a players worth and Grealish has played a superb part in this team since the WC.

They are....but clearly some do not have that ability if they are only judging his contribution by way of the obvious stats.
