Not sure the maths is simple, nor the relative gains to player and club, but the concept certainly is.This is one of the reasons that people were too focused on his fee, because his commercial potential is huge. Not saying for a second that should be a reason to buy or play him, both of which should be founded upon playing ability and form, but to suggest marketability doesn’t feature in a player’s valuation is hopelessly naive. It’s simple maths.
