Yeah I've always wanted to see him start coming in to the middle of the pitch a bit more rather than standing right on the touch line. I mentioned earlier in this thread last week that he's actually really good at going past players when he has a bit more room in the center of the pitch and glides past them because he can get moving a bit, he's not slow once he gets going, but I don't think he's got super quick acceleration, which is why when he has a very narrow space to work in very wide on the left, he doesn't often try to beat the man down the line.

When he comes in the middle a bit and can run facing goal, he goes past players and also picks out some nice passes. There was a few passes in the first half yesterday where his vision looked outstanding, but he doesn't get much opportunity to do that when he is right on the touchline and either has an option of going down the line or cutting back inside.

I've always said to get the best out of grealish and to see his true quality, you can't restrict him to a very small area of the pitch. Obviously when necessary he will do a good job there and he's good defensively too, but in terms of attack, he needs to able to roam a bit, obviously with some discipline and shape still.
Good observations!

Deserved a goal, another great performance from Jack. Both Bernardo and Jack caused the Rags a lot of problems down the left today.

I thought it was noticeable that Bernardo drifted right later in the second half as Jack tired to help Foden double up down the right.
Jack had his man on toast and still works tirelessly for the team. Bernardo used Jack’s attributes to the fullest.

Enjoyed watching him send Amrabat to the changing room with that dummy in the first half

I assume Amrabat asked to come off at half time after that
Asked to come off?? Jesus he would have had to queue up being the new fella. I assume he had to queue up for that behind their inspirational Captain Marvel.

We didnt even stop trying that night of the Tracey v. Kanchelskis debacle. Remember Ian Brightwell running his balls off sliding all over the place - albeit unsuccessfully - and at least trying to stop the barrage of goals going in. I could not believe what i was watching when Rodri strolled through their defence in prelude to the third.

Bringing it back to Jack. Thought he was superb yesterday. Him and Bernie roasted that right back time and time again.

His best performance in a blue shirt yesterday, thought he looked a class act …. then again the opposition weren’t up to much.

Played great against the rags. Looking forward to seeing him in the next match for sure.

He may not even play in the next game. You may well see Doku come in for him. I said yesterday, before the team was announced, that I'd have Jack in the team, for the extra control he offers in potentially tricky games (though it didn't turn out at all tricky). Against Bournemouth, Pep may decide he wants the better ability that Jeremy has for taking a defender on.

Back to his best. Mixed up his game much more and was an attacking threat throughout. If he can just nail that cut inside and shot he would add so many goals to his game. He tends to take an extra touch to set himself which makes it obvious he is going for the far corner. Small criticism, and not something I am too bothered about if he plays like he did yesterday. Love him.

I think part of that is because he had overlapping player ( which was Bernardo yesterday) that gave him more options + space.

I think Jack will benefit from having a proper LB who makes the runs and help him create chances instead of CBs filling there ( Ake / Gvardiol )

For me they are rivals for the same spot, both with different qualities. It presents Pep with a dilemma for the upcoming games.
Not sure it’s a dilemma Pep will know which games suit Grealish and which Doku, plus Doku can play right and rest Foden. So he can play both. I ‘d expect Grealish to play the bigger games though.

For the games where the opposition can hurt you on the break Grealish Is the natural choice because he doesn’t lose it, and he pulls markers away from others, like at old Trafford. In fact going into today’s game I thought that that team was our strongest and that Doku was best for games like today were the opposition sit back. But the way Doku played today he has to come into contention for the biggest games now because he crated lots and he didn’t give it away

The thing is I honestly don’t care who starts between them. If it turns out that Doku is a miles better player for us than Jack in that role then fucking great stuff. It’s all about the teams success over any individual for me but I have a big issue with people using Doku’s performances as a stick to unnecessarily beat Grealish with.
I reckon Pep is relishing the tough choices ahead.

To have two such contrasting players available on the left wing can only be a good thing in the long run.

Horses for courses. Control needed, Grealish. Creativity and directness needed, Doku.

My post was not to castigate Grealish but to suggest that he maybe could be utilised in positions other than wide left. He has the physicality and discipline to play in the middle so it does surprise me a little that he rarely plays anything but left wing when some players such as Bernado and Gundo played different roles frequently - sometimes several in the space of one match.
