10 | Jack Grealish - 2024/25

The reason being Pep's the best in the world when it comes to understanding midfield play.

There's a reason why Grealish is being used only on the left: he's our least versatile midfielder/attacking player. 20 y.o. Savinho knows better what is required to play on the right, even though he played on the left at Girona. Something big is missing in Grealish game, that's the reason why Pep plays him only on the left. He can have a free role at Villa, not at the best club in the world. Such a role is for the likes of Silva and KDB.
No one mentioned a free role, agree he'd never get that.

Savinho always played on the right until he went to Girona.

It makes no sense for Grealish to play on the right - he doesn't have the pace to beat his man on the outside and he can't cut in on his left. None of that means he's unable to play a more central role.

Why does Pep play Grealish only on the left, given he plays KDB, Bernardo, Foden, Gundogan, Nunes, etc. in different positions? Guess it's because Grealish lacks something essential to play a different role in a Pep system. Apparently, Pep would rather play Lewis in midfield

It would be interesting to see Pep experimenting with Grealish centrally, but I'm sure there are good reasons why this hasn't happened yet.

Maybe Pep only plays him on the left because he likes what he brings to the team playing on the left. The simplest reason probably the right reason.

Surely, Pep likes what Bernardo offers on the right, or what Akanji offers at RB and LB. But he plays them in other parts of the pitch, too. Because they can do it. Because Pep likes what they offer in different roles.

No matter how many injuries we have, Grealish starts on the left, if he starts. The simplest explanation is that Pep doesn't like what he can offer in other positions.

I'd like to see how Grealish does in a central role. Would be fun. Pep's the best but can make mistakes.

That said, Grealish is 29 and he has never been trusted to play as a CM, for club or country. Some memories of his performances at Villa are somewhat distorted. He wasn't a CM there but a left-sided attacking mid with freedom to roam as he was the star of the team.

Only Sterling got as many player performance posts as Grealish probably because they're both frustrating to watch which caused so many conflicting opinions . But there's a difference between them. Sterling contributed with plenty of goals and assists, Grealish hasn't done.

Raheem scored 128 goals with 72 assists in 7 seasons and could have scored many more goals and assists because he was involved a lot in our attacks. He played on both wings scoring 91 goals with 44 assists in 269 appearances on the left wing.

Jack is into his 4th season with us and in 3 seasons has scored 14 goals with 18 assists. This season he's been mostly injured or unavailable due to a 'mystery' injury, but thus far has 1 assist from 7 games. We can all come on here and sugar coat his performances with remarks like - "Jack draws players onto him and wins fouls". "Jack doesn't lose the ball", "Jack tracks back" etc, etc. But be honest with yourself, has he been a success, has he contributed enough, is he a game changer, and is he worth anywhere near what we paid for him? For me the answer is no to all 4 questions, sadly. At Villa he was exciting and dynamic scoring goals and assists with plenty of MOTM performances. I can't say that he has been for us. What's happened to that form? I think he's been underwhelming as he has so much more to offer but mostly players the easy option safe passes and he mostly plays within himself.

Raheem played on both wings and as a false 9, Jack has only played as a left winger and I doubt he'd be good enough to play on RW or false 9. And as for being played in centre mid I'm not sure but maybe worth trying.

Am I a hater? Don't be silly. Do I like Grealish? I certainly don't dislike him, but I'd like him a lot more if he could discover his Villa form because if he can discover his Villa form he'd be a game changer. I think he still has this season to prove himself but unless he starts scoring goals with goal assists, and being a game changer I very much doubt he'll be at City next season.

And I want him to prove me wrong. I was once critical of Sterling but he proved me and all his doubters wrong. I'm still waiting for Grealish to...
I’d say you’ve captured my thoughts perfectly. I’ve never made any secret of the fact that I’m not a fan of his. I think he was a luxury buy and we would have been much better served investing that £100m in some full backs and defensive midfielders. I’ve seen nothing from him in the past three seasons to make me change my mind. The word that comes to mind when I think of him is underwhelming.

It’s often said on here that Pep improves players he works with. Can we honestly say that applies to Jack ?

I just checked out Transfermarkt. His current valuation is £55m. I think if we got an offer in that range for him he’d be gone.

he still cant beat his best G/A output at Villa (18 and 17 G/A his two best seasons at Villa) at the best attacking team in world football with the best striker in the world, that speaks a lot about him. you won't find many attacking players in the Pep era who came in and failed to beat their output at past clubs playing sufficient minutes.

heres a fun fact: he hasnt scored for City in 11 months.
