10 | Jack Grealish - 2024/25

I think Doku already has 6 goals and 11 assists.
So what, when Pep picks Grealish he knows these numbers. So when he picks Grealish which he does he’s obviously looking for something other than just goals and assists. Again this isn’t difficult.Pep doesn’t pick Grealish oblivious to his game and stats he picks him for reasons.
When he picks Doku again he does it for reasons.

What other reasons than goals and assists? I'll narrow it down a bit. He can't beat a player, he has no speed or turn of pace, and he can't whip a ball into the box. Well maybe he puts in a cross now and again but he'd rather get rid of the ball sideways or backwards. Doku has all those attributes btw.

Why are you asking me some bloke on bluemoon, what do I know. Ask the manager that picks him ,the most successful coach in the world at the moment. He’s the one with the reasons.
Unless you think he picks him for no reason at all.

Two years left on his contract next summer and his book value will be 40 mill. He is on top wages and he will be 30 next September. I can't imagine the club will be considering a contract extension based on his recent contribution but I think he could be difficult to move on. Assuming we don't want to see him run his contract down and move in summer 2027 for free then it's hard to see a club that he would consider moving to who would pay say his book value and take his wages on.

There 'may' be Saudi interest but I'd be surprised if he moved there and after that I don't see a host of eager buyers. Could be very tricky.

Only Sterling got as many player performance posts as Grealish probably because they're both frustrating to watch. But there's a difference between them. Sterling contributed with plenty of goals and assists, Grealish hasn't done.

Raheem scored 128 goals with 72 assists in 7 seasons and could have scored many more goals and assists because he was involved a lot in our attacks. He played on both wings scoring 91 goals with 44 assists in 269 appearances on the left wing.
Absolutely. For all his frustrating moments, Sterling’s impact at City was on another level compared to Grealish—there’s really no comparison. Sterling brought goals, pace, and that directness City needed in the final third, consistently delivering across multiple seasons. Grealish hasn’t shown he can match that output, and it’s unlikely he’ll ever reach Sterling’s level. Anyone who thinks otherwise is definitely viewing it through rose-colored glasses.

Jack is into his 4th season with us and in 3 seasons has scored 14 goals with 18 assists. This season he's been mostly injured or unavailable due to a 'mystery' injury, but thus far has 1 assist from 7 games. We can all come on here and sugar coat his performances with remarks like - "Jack draws players onto him and wins fouls". "Jack doesn't lose the ball", "Jack tracks
Given the incredible players Pep has coached at Barcelona, Bayern, and City, Grealish doesn’t quite measure up offensively compared to that elite company. His output and impact is just not at the level of Pep’s usual attacking players. When you think of the creativity and effectiveness of Pep’s past offensive talents, Grealish is LEVELS BELOW—by a fair margin, no doubt.

back" etc, etc. But be honest with yourself, has he been a success, has he contributed enough, is he a game changer, and is he worth anywhere near what we paid for him? For me the answer is no to all 4 questions, sadly.
City got their pants pulled down. He wasn't, isn't and will never be a £100M player. His is not even a £50M player.

At Villa he was exciting and dynamic scoring goals and assists with plenty of MOTM performances. I can't say that he has been for us. What's happened to that form? I think he's been underwhelming as he has so much more to offer but mostly players the easy option safe passes and he mostly plays within himself.
Being "exciting and dynamic" at Villa, a bottom-half team then, isn’t necessarily a mark of top-level quality. It’s a different game when you're a big fish in a smaller pond, and the expectations aren’t as high. He might just be better suited to a mid-table team where he has more freedom and fewer expectations to deliver at an elite level every game. At the very top, it’s a whole different story, and he hasn’t shown that he can reach those standards.

Jack has only played as a left winger and I doubt he'd be able to play on RW or false 9. And as for being played in centre mid I'm not sure but maybe worth trying.
Not a Pep midfield player, does not have the ability and the brains to be a Pep midfielder, but we might as well play him there, since we have been atrocious now of late.

Am I a hater? Don't be silly. Do I like Grealish? I certainly don't dislike him, but I'd like him a lot more if he could discover his Villa form because if he can discover his Villa form he'd be a game changer. I think he still has this season to prove himself but unless he starts scoring goals with goal assists, and being a game changer I very much doubt he'll be at City next season.

And I want him to prove me wrong.
He will never be a game-changer for City, maybe for a mid-table team.

If it were only about goals/assists, Pep would have started Foden over Grealish in the Treble season. Foden finished the season on the bench with Grealish being a starter. Why?

At his best Grealish contributes to the balance and rhythm of our game, things which are not obvious. The best defence for it is that it worked perfectly well between March and June 2023.

But Grealish couldn't stay fit long enough and lost form. Also, Pep had something in mind when he went for direct players like Doku and Savinho. So, Grealish's problems are down to a mixture of his injuries and Pep tweaking our system. The system worked on the condition KDB was available and in form, but he got injured and we needed other direct players.

Surprised you don't have an opinion on why Pep picks him tbh.

Pep wants Jack to score more goals and get assists, he's said so more than once. Jack has also admitted he doesn't score and assist enough. Pep also wants him to be more decisive and direct which he isn't as he's still pondering on the ball not sure what to do, so he most often passes it backwards or sideways and he's been playing the same way since he joined. And when he does try and take a player on he's closed down pretty quickly because it's so easy to see what he intends to do because defenders can read him like a book.

I think we'd have sold him last summer if we'd received a decent offer so this season Pep is playing him hoping Jack can rediscover his confidence and Villa form which he hasn't due to being injured and in and out of the team. Jack is a confidence player and when his confidence is high he's a decent player, otherwise he's either poor or average. He's playing for his future and he's in the shop window this season looking for a buyer I think.

So Pep wants all these things according to some he doesn’t do that picks him regularly. Hardly likely. Put it this way if we had a fully fit squad and were playing a C/L final I’d expect Jack to be picked before Doku.
If you want my opinion why then I’d say he give us more control, and leaves us less open to dangerous counters, creates space for those around him.Is that why Pep likes him and picks him, maybe I’d say probably but whether it’s that or something else he has good reason.
