13 years since the Hamburg UEFA Cup tie

It was the best Etihad atmosphere we've had. Cheap tickets, chasing the game, and giving it our all. Dippers and rags remember games theyve won. We are different. Nice to win, but the journey is the important part. ( except i was 3 rows from front and had a dickhead cameraman blocking my view for half the game.)

Anyone at the away leg will remember when Stevie Ireland scored early on we all went mad but the seats in their ground were the ones where the back of the seat moved. Not like here in England

So when people stood on the back of a seat to celebrate it was like dominoes

One lad broke his arm, loads ended up in a pile between seats.

Madness

The repherbaum after the match was one of the best nights ever
It was utter carnage when Ireland scored bodies everywhere haha.
The friendly with Hamburg earlier was also a mental trip.

Always planned on going to this one as my GF at the time was half german, and was well up for it. (No pics or silly comments please)
Went to buy couple of tickets and discovered they had sold out in a day but could get hospitality, which if I remember were around 75 quid each but did include a sit down dinner.
Gary Owen was the host, first thing he says 'anyone here from Germany' GF jumps up and recites something in German and theres 200 pairs of eyes on us.
During the meal Gary comes over for a chat, clearly a nice guy and one of my fav players back in the day,
Eventually I left them to it and took my seat.
I think she polished of a couple of bottles of wine that night and I never saw her in the 2nd half !
Happy Days.
Incidentally prior to this i booked flights and hotel for Istanbul, went for a break anyway, bought a match ticket of a blue and saw a very young Fernandinho in the Final.

went both legs, remember coming out of the stadium in hamburg not having a clue where the coach was, luckily I had swapped numbers with a guy I was sat next too on the flight who some what guided me to the coach, we were flying in and and of hannover so would of been bolloxed, good trip despite the result

Did you see Gary in the 2nd half or was he missing also?

the best atmosphere I’ve ever heard at the etihad. Cheap tickets meant the crowd was made up of lots of city fans who had been priced out and large groups of city fans were able to go together - you never see that now.

the closest atmosphere at home to this, for me, was spurs in the champions league and even then it’s not close to this one

“Istanbul, Istanbul, we are coming”

Seeing West Ham lining up for their game with Lyon took me back to our quarter final with Hamback in 2009. What a tie this was. I remember it going absolutely mental in the pub I was in when Ireland put us 1-0 up early on in the first leg.

The atmosphere in the 2nd leg was absolutely incredible and still to this day is rivalled by only a handful of fixtures. We must have hit the post and bar 2-3 times in search of an equaliser for what would have been an unlikely comeback.

We’ve come a long way since then it’s fair to say.

Pre-Match

Was in Thailand for that game in a city bar run by a manc called baz(who unfortunately died a couple of years later) and the atmosphere from the tv was awesome .
