I'm not saying he's having the same problems that Stones had 2 or 3 years ago, but I get the feeling it comes from the same sort of place - an issue more of mentality than ability. Stones' resurgence gives me hope that Laporte can do it too.

He might well be one of the best 3rd choice CBs in the league. Nonetheless, he is 3rd choice - to me at least, and it seems I'm not the only one who thinks it.

He needs to accept that that's where he is right now, be grateful that a 3rd choice player gets more chances to play under Pep than under managers who rotate less, and really knuckle down so that when he is playing, he can prove his quality and make his case for being higher in the pecking order.

At the moment, I feel like every time he plays I'm reminded that I'd rather see whichever one of Stones or Dias he's in for.

Still a Rolls Royce of a player - might have fallen down the pecking order at CB, but having such a accomplished player as a 3rd choice at that position will be crucial throughout the season. He did the job when asked to play at LB against the red dippers in 2019 and with his ball playing skills he could deputise at DM if necessary.

I remember when he was injured after that needless challenge, and we had the game vs the scousers looming, wondering how the hell we’d cope without him.

Dias has been a revelation - the perfect partner alongside Stones, but also normally covers for Laporte’s once a match clusterfuck moment.

Laporte is still a quality CB and if we can keep him happy and fighting for his place, I’ll be happy to have him as 3rd choice, rotated in.

The Dias-Stones partnership is the one though.

Was the joint-best CB in the league alongside Van Dijk before his injury, but hasn't really been the same since he came back. And now Stones has suddenly become one of the best CBs in the league at the same time, it's clearly had an effect on his confidence. I still like him, though. He's very good with the ball at his feet (the weekend was a rare off game for him there) and can be depended on if Stones or Dias are ever injured.
