I can't believe people are comparing Dias and Fernandinho's mistake with Laporte's. For the first 2, yeah they made a mistake, but the decision making there was of miliseconds. In Laporte's case he has like 7-8 seconds to see that Benzema is covered, that Vinicius is not gonna be caught by anyone and that if he doesn't move, he will have a 1v1 with Ederson. With all the time he had, it's unbelievable he chose to do nothing at all. That is 100 times worse than what Dias and Fernandinho did.

There are maybe 4 seconds between him looking round to check on Benzema, and Vinicius having the shot. However, when Laporte looks round, he can see Rodrygo (I think), coming in behind Zinchenko. If Laporte decides to try and intercept Vinicius, then he's leaving Zinchenko up against two players in the box.

The xG on the shot was 0.24 on fotmob because it's under pressure, with Rodri's foot inches away when he shoots, from an angle, and Ederson is well positioned. It's quite likely that if Laporte had got there first, while Vinicius was a couple of yards further back, then he'd have had an easy pull back into the box, as Benzema and Rodryho had both held their runs at the edge of the box, while Zinchenko had followed Laporte.

Nobody defended brilliantly, but it was mostly a great piece of play from Madrid.

Laporte as a ball playing cb (building from the back is great) but his actual defending (positioning and decision making is poor). Always seems to loose concentration during the game, always has brain farts. Costs us in big game moments

Dont talk shite.

He is far from poor, but we can do better.
Could we? Who?

If we want to bring in a first choice centre-back, he's got to be better in some aspect than (and broadly level in others with) Dias and/or Stones. I'm not saying that's impossible (I love both of them but accept that no-one is perfect) but it does seem a pretty small market.

Or we could bring in someone who accepts his starting position is behind those two, who knows that with injuries and suspensions and the amount of games we play and Pep's fondness for rotation, he will get a reasonable amount of gametime and a chance to fight for that starting position, but he's going to have to compete with a solid, reliable and improving Nathan Aké for it. But would someone who fits that description be better than Laporte?

Need Laporte back to his best starting today , he has had a couple of wobbles but he is a class centre back ,it has to be one of the toughest jobs in the world playing in our central defence , we play such a high line and one misplaced pass and then we could get exposed. Its looking like Stones could be out for the rest of the season , we need Eric to step up.

For a second I thought Garcia was still here, almost soiled myself. Oh the horror!
