Lovely player - but there were 1 or 2 times when his slowness on the counter caught him out - however because our defense is brilliant those aren't that high risk, which is good. he's very intelligent out of possession.

Did well tonight. Lucky with the penalty, half decent goalie would have saved it. Really prefer that he was not our regular penalty taker.

People seem to forget that we bought Dihno when he was 28. He was a well established pro who knew his position. Rodders is still learning and for me, is a class act already. I expect big things in the future.

Already starting to put the naysayers in their place !

People conflate two very different dimensions of mobility: distance covered and pace. Rodri has always been very mobile in terms of distance covered. He isn't pacy but compensates for it with intelligent positioning. Qualities like good reading of the game, anticipation of threats, excellent positioning, etc. are much more difficult to notice than pacy recovering, brave challenges, "steel", etc.

If we had a physicality monster at DM who was bad at positioning and reading of the game but excellent at recovering and tackling, many would rate him better than Rodri despite being in fact half the player.

This guy doing the dirty work is allowing players like Cancelo to thrive. It’s harder to pick up players taking positions on tv than in the ground, I did notice him dropping in between Laporte and Stones when the full backs moved forward. Get practising those penalties please Rodri if you are on spot kick duties though.
