We constantly shift to a back 3 anyways, there's no reason in certain games against low blocks, we can't use him as an elite passing CB with Phillips in front of him, and in bigger games, perhaps shift him back to DM with a more proper CB behind him. For example:
Eddie
Stones/Walker/Akanji
Rodri/Dias
Ake/Laporte
Phillips/Rodri/Bernie
6 attacking players in front.
You can also easily transition to this from say a 4231 with any two of Rodri/Phillips/Bernie in the 2, then let the fullbacks go wide, wingers (Grealish, Foden, Mahrez, Palmer) come inside (which all 4 would prefer, and have Rodri/Phillips drop between the CBs with Phillips/Bernie sitting in front, recreating a 3151 high attacking setup, best against these low blocks.
In either scenario, we can kind of allow Cancelo/Lewis/Gomez be less of a liability at the back and let them be wider players, or we can use classical wingers in there in which case we have 2 phenomenal wide-men in the academy who would be a phenomenal addition to our squad to do this.
