19 | Ilkay Gundogan - 2024/25

Last year I was told by almost everyone here that Kova cannot hold a kindle to Gundo. Now that I saw Gundo play and I thought it is not too bad and people are slaying him. Come on, you all know one year without major injury will not change someone’s class dramatically. Gundo was not famous for his legs either. The only real conclusion I can draw with my observation is that Kova is a more useful midfielder than Gundo in current Man City team. Gundo has his advantages but overall he was an opportunist in my limited memory, an assassin. And also as I randomly observed before, he was never rated among Man City fans. Him and Mahrez were the most slayed players among City fans. It was just the treble season and departure at high note that leave fans with pinky memories.

Why do you need an injury for your ability to dip?

Age will do it too. Some people's decline is drawn out, some can be a steep decline and that's what's happened to Gundo.

Thing with Kovacic is that worries me he was at Chelsea when they went down the pan and he was awful

And you do know they got forced to be sold and people like Lampard and Porter were in charge after in Kova’s last season, right? With Kova they won UCl and Europa and was always safe in top 4.
 
Despite it's not true. Gündogan was subbed in right before the last goal, so it's green. That a team with a 4-0 lead in the second half doesn't push as much is just normal.

Yes it is. And he was not on for our 4th. He was only on for the goal against...Gundo to Galatasary.
 
He has been a magnificent player for us and may yet still play a part this season with 2 other younger midfielders around him, however in the summer it's time for him to either move on or my preference to stay on with us and start his coaching career
 
The drop off when he came on was alarming. No surprise then the results we had when he started.

Real shame to end it this way but I don’t think anyone foresaw him being needed every game.

The UCL final was against us and I don't think Kovacic did much in the 7 minutes he was on the pitch.
Kovacic is certainly better than Gundogan at the moment but our squad size and injury list is not helping Gundogan.
Its simply not a case of " the older the fiddle, the sweeter the tune" in this instance.

The UCL final was Kova’s first game back from injury he got in the second leg of the quarter final. A bit like KdB’s UCL final, did the hard work but missed the final. He was Chelsea’s player of the year for 19-20 and a crucial player under Tuchel.

You're the guy that brought up that you were told by everyone here that Kovacic couldn't hold a candle to Gundogan.
He couldn't then but this is now. Time waits for no man.
I don't think either Gundogan or Kovacic are currently good enough if we had a fully fit squad but that's where we are.
It is pointless comparing them as there is a good chance that they will both get a lot of game time together, in Gundogans case a lot more than he thought he'd be getting.

I respectfully disagree. Time will tell. Your assessment is that Kova will be benched or sold once the squad get fully fit or some proper midfielders arrive. And my assessment is that Kova will be one of City’s most crucial players 2025 and 2026 no matter what, as he was since 2023.

As I said, only time will tell.
I doubt Gundogan will be with us next season so Kovacic will get more time on the pitch.
I just envisage us buying more players before next season starts and they will have to be better than Gundogan and Kovacic.

If we get in the players we want this winter and next summer and Rodri is in good shape, Kovacic will be off to Saudi for one last huge payday.

Kovacic is an ok squad player but he isn’t the medium or long term answer to our midfield.

If you are watching gundy for the first time he is nothing like the player he was before he left , he was one of , with kev , the best midfielder in the prem for years , peps first signing in 2017
