19 | Ilkay Gundogan - 2024/25

Our board thought this was a better move than triggering Bruno Guimaraes’ release clause whilst it was active…

You have to question what the goal is. Without significant investment we are going to fall off a cliff when Pep leaves. Having the best manager in the world papers over the cracks of some bad transfer decisions by the heirarchy. But when Pep leaves, we are going to need the board to be better as the manager won’t bail us out any more.

Close to £400m needs investing into this squad over the next two summers.
Real Madrid would do it without blinking. We are the only other club who are going to compete with them at the moment.

I love Gundo but he's struggling to find any decent form.

It's time for Pep to use his head instead of his heart and start McAtee at his expense.
We are 4 times League Champions, Treble winners and we are pinning our hopes on a young lad fresh from loan at Sheff Utd to replace a guy who peaked 2 years ago... Not exactly a stellar business continuity plan imo. I like Mcatee but really why are we shopping at Lidl when we are millionaires.

We won’t even be competing in our own league post-Pep unless the club invests properly in the immediate future, never mind with Madrid. This team is at a cross-roads - indeed the entire club is. If they want to stay at the top they are going to need to show it, because they haven’t done over the last two summers.

I imagine that we have our eyes on somebody that wasn't going to be available until next summer so didn't want to piss our money away on Guimaraes.

Some of you utter fucking dickheads should go and support the rags or something.

For pointing out he's been poor?

He has. I was happy he come back but he's looking shot at the moment. It's November and no signs of him getting up to speed.

Hopefully he will, but I'm not expecting too much from what ive seen.

It’s been noticeable since the Brentford at home that Gündoğan has looked miles off the pace. Not just readjusting or not quite fit yet after a short pre-season (because we’re now 13 weeks into this season), he looks heavy-legged and doesn’t look sharp at all.

Of course, with the ball at his feet he’ll still be able to put in a cross like yesterday’s for the goal even when he’s in his sixties because he’ll always have that ability as a footballer. But from minute-to-minute as the game moves around the pitch, the opposition win the ball back, then we win the ball back, the game is moving quickly from front to back and right to left… in these situations he looks lost this season. Makes me feel a bit sad.

I’d be interested to see what he’s been doing during the international breaks. He looks like he needs some intensive training to get himself in optimal shape and increase his sharpness. Change of diet for the rest of his career at his age now (I feel the same about Kevin De Bruyne n’all, to prolong their careers as long as we can, do something different).

If he’s just been going on holiday, I’d be a bit disappointed.

Even with De Bruyne and Bobb out injured, we still have multiple options to play in attacking midfield:
Foden-Bernardo
Foden-Nunes
Bernardo-Nunes
Foden-McAtee
Foden-Wright
Foden-O’Reilly
Bernardo-McAtee
Bernardo-Wright
Bernardo-O’Reilly
(not sure I’d go for Nunes plus a youngster just yet)
…so that it doesn’t have to be Gündoğan every game.

I think at his age now, the more sparingly we start him- every other game, every third game with a sub performance in another? -the more quality we’re going to get from him.

But he has to work on his sharpness, something needs to happen or change. At the moment he’s offering too little from minute-to-minute and any of the young lads would offer just as much or more.

The bloke came back to be an impactful super sub and help prop up the squad.

He’s been flogged to fuck as half our squad are in hospital. Hardly his fault.

His passing accuracy and intelligence is still there even if he’s lost a bit of speed.

The people on here slagging him off know fuck all about football.
