19 | Ilkay Gundogan - 2024/25

It's an easy one to blame him for all our troubles, but the turnovers were insane. He was being rushed on by 2 attackers with huge spaces either side of him, it's not normal. He was handing players over because he's not go the legs to get back, but he's never been that player who can do that. So frankly i was fucking bemused that Rico and Bernardo didn't just sit and take turns if they needed to move into the 8.

I think it's safe to say the club won't be taking up the option of a further year. There are no signs whatsoever of him getting back to the intensity of the PL and I imagine he'll be getting a more than decent wage. Sums up the season generally as nothing has gone right for us and bringing him back was a mistake (with the benefit of hindsight obviously).
It was a clear mistake from jump. And some of us said it at the time.

Gundogan has already started showing signs of slowing down in that 3-piece year.

He should have never come back. But in the end it doesn't matter. Had he not come back, we'd still have been down Rodri and still in trouble. So he is not the issue.

But he was never the solution.

This is a fair point, he was never a solution but he would have been a useful addition if we had got in what we needed. Like I said in one of the other threads, 4 transfer windows we have failed to get in what's needed and its surely the reason Txixi is fucking off - he's tired of it all and doesn't have it in him anymore.

he can still be useful as a sub or if he plays higher up with enough rest between games.

never been a big fan but he gets way too much hate atm. if anyone should be targeted its pep and txiki.

To say his legs are gone is nonsense, he never had them, was always slow, he needs a Ferni or Rodri to get the best out of him, he never was, is, a player who is comfortable chasing back.

Very true, he was an extra body in the squad, great to bring off the bench and start occasional games, the loss of Rodri and KDB has hit us badly and Gundo never was and certainly never will be a DM, Barca tried to play him in that role and he was shocking.

I was delighted when he came back but it's pretty clear that he's not up to the job anymore.
See out the season playing back up to the new midfielder we hopefully sign in January then finish his career in the MLS

Some fans let nostalgia get the better of them, it clouds clear thinking on occasions though. He's clearly regressed whilst being away, largely due to age, and it shows.
