Seems to struggle when he's up there alone, but understand it's not easy to play as a lone striker. Even there were doubts towards Aguero playing upfront alone during the earlier stages of his career.

Still think he's a talented kid who's adapting to a new level of football. At least he's trying and running his arse off.
100% Agree - we did not play to his strengths last night and it's very hard to judge him when he gets short cameos in previous games. Not wishing to keep going on about Mahrez - Both strikers last night weren't given the ball early enough and with Dortmund playing so deep there was no space - neither got a chance of operating in space. With Mahrez on the right we simply don't look fluid as an attacking force. It worked last year when we didn't have an out and out striker but taking four of five touches before releasing the ball and also not being aware of creating space is becoming a problem. Haaland is something else but even he looks less of a threat (if possible) when we play an indirect wide man who is a stats hog playing it back every time. Julien really needs someone who can get to the byline and find him in the box or playing with Kev who always looks to release the ball early with pace.

Good sign that the only opportunity he got, his snap shot was on target - he will be fine because he has all the attributes to learn and learn quickly.

Peoples early expectations of Alvarez were mad with comments such as reminds me of a mix of Aergio and Carlos.
Every time he plays I don’t really get what role he is supposed to be.
Reminds me a bit more of a central Navas at the moment

I really wanted him to shine from the outset and for him to look like a cracking buy but so far he looks miles off it.
Am waiting for the penny to drop but if he isn’t up to it I hope we can own the situation fairly quickly and not have the experiment drag on at the cost of Palmer‘s development

Well, he's been on the pitch for 464 minutes and has 4 goals - and 70 minutes of those were in the match yesterday when he was much more isolated.

Yesterday he didn't have a huge impact, but then the team struggled with 10 men, and he was often left to press on his own, which can never be as effective. Clearly, with Liverpool coming up, the team weren't told to push for a win that they didn't need, and we even saw Ederson time wasting from very early on.

In the other matches he's looked really good, so I'd definitely be hopeful for the rest of the season. Once next week's break is out of the way, it's 2 games a week, so he's likely to get at least a couple more starts before the World Cup I'd assume.
1 goal every 116 minutes. Think only Aguero, Henry and Dzeko can beat that.

I've wanted express my frustrations for Alvarez. It's not down to him. Even Haaland struggled with Guardiola's obsession of the midfield and the forward line tends to suffer until the mid adapts and it needs to play with JA in the team to do so.

Simple things like an intentional one-two, which we all can see, tends to come back out to the midfield. Little things like Alvarez making what I think he would consider a 'normal' run isn't acted upon and you can see the attitude change to being 'fed up' on the pitch, which is why he gets himself involved in the play, deeper in.

I find myself hoping to see him out wide instead of Mahrez, even if we're to keep accommodating Haaland. There's nothing Mahrez can do, at this point, that Alvarez can't being fresher, quicker and younger with better decision making. That would suit for being a 'second striker' with natural finishing.

I feel sorry for the kid and I hope his head doesn't go down.

I think I read a report said Alvarez was not feeling very well recently. Understandable it is his first European winter and he needs to adjust to the weather. (If we can still call UK part of Europe:) The first winter is usually hard for boys from South America. Jesus said he was home sick when he first arrived.

I think that Pep has patience and trust in him. So should we.

It is up to Alvarez if he wants to toughen it up and adjust to English football and weather. Many ran away to Spain like Rafinha but I hope him to stay.

Forget your winter weather comment for a start. The temperatures over the last month have been incredibly mild. We can judge him on that score by the end of January after we've had some proper winter weather. I think Alvarez is a tough young lad anyway and it's so early to judge him yet. Look at how many of our great players struggled in their first season at the club.

He comes from here...

Not sure why there’s some overreacting in here. Did anyone seriously expect him to contribute a lot this year? He’s getting his minutes, learning each time he’s out there… good experience for him. His arrival was for the future not for the present.

Told posters to curb their enthusiasm about this one. He would prove to be a decent signing but not an improvement on Jesus as some had previously suggested.
Oh come on, don't pretend to be the voice of reason haha, many of us agreed with you from the very beginning, it happens to every young player on their first european experience. However, there's very little to critizise about Alvarez's game today, not even Jesus could've stood out in this game, it's as if every time he gets the chance to be a starter the opponent coincidentally chooses an ultra-defensive style of play (not because of him of course), you can clearly see him surrounded by 2 or 3 defenders almost every time. And it's not like the team is playing extremely well, it's no coincidence that both Alvarez and Haaland had zero service in the previous game, Haaland has the height and aerial ability advantage but he also needs the help from his teammates.
