I liked Ferran Torres but Julian Alvarez already looks a level above. The success ofJesus at Arsenel shows the level needed to play for City and how much learning about the game is needed to play in a Pep side?

Julian is an upgrade on Ferran and Gabby and their combined strengths with the potential to be a truly great player as he learns and develops. I am a fan.

I love how full of confidence he is, those finishes yesterday (1 high into the roof of the net, 1 when he could have passed to Haaland) were the goals of someone backing themselves 100%.

The club just need to manage him carefully and not end up with another Aguero/Jesus situation, we all saw how quickly Jesus went from high flying confident youngster to nervous, frustrated wreck literally beating himself up when he missed a chance by being the backup who had to take every chance whenever Aguero was out for a fortnight.

Not to mention if he is as good as some people think, he might not settle for being the junior partner for too long.

Hopefully the 442 we played yesterday and Alvarez being more comfortable on the wing straight away will mean there's less of an overlap between them.

It's too early to say and we have little insight yet but I think personality wise he might be more of a brawler than Jesus. The occasional thing that didn't go his way last night didn't seem to phase him at all, he just got straight back at it. Jesus seemed like a lovely guy but as you say he got himself twisted round the axle and lost a lot of confidence, was possibly 'too nice' even? I just have a feeling Alvarez will stand up for himself which might in turn cause its own problems but there are worse problems to have than Alvarez turning to Haaland and saying.. bullshit, you can be my wingman!

Always think that two footedness is an under-rated asset, and Alvarez is very two-footed. Must be huge advantage as a striker to take the ball on either foot as it comes to you, and how does a defender know which side to show you?

Anyone know whether Julian is left or right footed?

It's also hard to believe that he is actually older than Haaland

Those two goals reminded me so much of similar goals Sergio scored. Very Sergio-esque.
The second goal reminded me of Sergio's 4th against Leicester a few years ago - edge of the area, no obvious pass on so just smash it into the roof of the net!

What a prospect for 14 fucking million, where were the rest of Europe's scouts?

Looks like a cracking player. Two good finishes and he was still chasing down the ball in the last minute too. The way he carved out his chance that hit the post was encouraging also.

Could be bargain of the season.

Definitely right but showed with those 2 shots last night(one against the post) how good his weaker foot is.

Cracking player, thought he would take a little time to settle in but evidently not, even had a scouser come up today and say he looked a brilliant prospect, they aren't all bad.

Just going to enjoy watching him develop with us this season. He has all the tools to become a huge success and importantly the pressure on him is minimised with all the focus being on Haaland.
The beauty of this current crop of players is their versatility and ability to slot into a myriad of positions and formations which, for me anyway, negates the need to constantly claim one should be played above others. I've been guilty of it myself so can't be hypocritical about it. The truth is, from the evidence of a fairly small sample size of 5 games, everybody will play an important part of any success we have this season.
Very, very, exciting.

except navas was awful in front of goal and one of the worst finishers we have had in the last decade (except for the odd worldie he scored like the one against spurs) and technically no where near as good as Alvarez
No one was comparing the talent or technical ability, both players are miles apart in that regard, my point was about the work ethic and as limited Navas was, he had a good work ethic, a team player and Alvarez is the same

Seems to be so busy and always running even with the ball that sometimes his control seems a bit clumsy, but then he just runs more and gets the ball back anyway, which in a way is even better as the oppo's defence is not set then. :)

But how does he just keep on running?!

Get used to it, that's just the Álvarez way. I wrote this back when you first signed him:

"I don't think there's one that is too similar to Julian, but f I had to choose one it would be the most obvious: Gabriel Jesus. A "smallish" center forward that is versatile enough to play any attacking position.

I do think Julian is more clinical as a finisher and hopefully that bridges the difference between a good serviceable squad memeber as is Jesus, and a future star, which is what I think Julian has the potential of becoming.

The thing with Álvarez is that, at first glance, he doesn't wow you with anything:

-He isn't the fastest guy around, but most times than not, will win a race vs the defender. He has a special knack for stealing the ball off goalkeepers and defenders, as I'm sure you would have seen in some of those youtube videos. It's almost as if rivals don't expect him to be quick enough to get to them but he presses the turbo midrun and nabs an out of the ordinary number of balls from opposing keepers and center backs.

-He also doesn't have the flashiest of dribbling techniques, as I'm sure some of you also might have noticed from the video. It looks kind of clumsy, sometimes it seems like the ball gets too far from him, but the kid never loses control of the ball and always seems to get where he wants to.

-The one thing that does stand out is his accuracy to hit it between the posts. I don't have it at hand but there's a stat out there that shows that the dude has an abnormal rate of shots on target. The keeper might save it, but Julian doesn't send it wide or above. And I don't know if it's still the case, but at some point last season he was the player with the most goals outside the box in the World behind Messi."

I don't know how he does it, but no worries, no matter how it looks, ball control was never an issue for him. It might not look pretty, but it is highly effective.

I'm excited at the potential this fella has. In his own way, he could well be as important as Haaland will hopefully be. He looked the business last night. A "mini Aguero/Tevez", if you like. Not giving defenders a minute's peace.

Loved where Pep deployed him. With his work rate he basically gives us another midfielder.
