He's been playing too deep lately, too far away from the box, and it's very clear that he cannot play there as he is no midfielder, besides i agree that he needs a rest, he's been looking slow on and off the ball lately.
Alvarez should not be a guaranteed starter. Other midfielders (new joiners and Bernado Grealish included) should be given more minutes in the center to be prepared for situations like this.

The others are hardly given a try in no 10 position in regular games. We need to find someone who can perform without Rodri.

Okay lets just re-examine that statement..

Why is he leading the pack here in assists so far this season?

and he's our second highest scorer too:

If anything Pep is justified by trying to play him into form as he's producing!
Stats don’t always tell everything. Rat boy from the rags wouldn’t be good enough to get in our team when we have everyone fit and firing. Put him where Alvarez is for us though and he’d be producing assists for fun and plenty of goals. Wouldn’t mean he wouldn’t upset the balance of the team though and keep giving the ball away too much.

His first touch infuriated me. His link-up upfront looked like a player who has just joined up and is making his debut against Villa.

Awful for awhile now, should not be starting as much as he is at the moment. Give somebody else a chance in that position, whether it's Foden, Nunes, Bernardo, Grealish etc.

The definition of a headless chicken. Plays like an over enthusiastic 9 year old just running around aimlessly. His first touch is one of the worst I’ve ever seen and he can’t carry the ball to save his life. No spatial awareness and just slow as with decision making, and that’s generally poor anyway when he does make his mind up what to do.

One of my biggest complaints recently is that we have a load of midfielders that take zero responsibility for trying to create/make things happen. They’re all far too happy to pass backwards and leave it to someone else. Alvarez is the complete opposite, he is far too the other way. It’s like he feels that he has to create/score every time he touches the ball. He needs to calm down, put his foot on the ball and sometimes just take the easy option.

Has been the worst player for 1.5 months. Pep needs to try someone else in his position. Maybe Oscar bob needs to given run in the team

One of the worst first touches you’ve ever seen? You can’t have been a city fan for long

Did you not watch samaras?
