A couple of phrases in there that would probably raise eyebrows in the current climate.
Look at the date it was posted though.

Sports writing on the whole is in decline in my opinion. So it's not my imagination that for the most part contemporary football writing is utterly piss poor.
"They have been lauded to the skies, and they have had their office windows smashed by disgruntled supporters." Great line - could have been written in the 80's or 90's. Or 2000s.
According to the Guardian's own obituary it seems that Eric Todd was demoted when the Manchester Guardian moved to London. Only serves to confirm all my prejudices about that newspaper.
The difference in journalistic ability is really quite stark. Enjoyed reading that cheersFrom the Vault: Manchester City's 1968 league title triumph | Manchester City | The Guardian

Unfortunately Tyne-Tees TV had the worst picture quality for football of any of the commercial companies back then, so bad that I doubt even modern techniques could improve it much. It's as if they were using a hand-held 8mm camera with shit focus. The BBC filmed the rags final against Benfica in colour even though scarcely anyone had a colour receiver then, hence the picture quality was much better.is the game at Newcastle in 68 available in colour?
im amazed when i watch it thats its balck and white and of poor quality...
the rags european cup win a few days later is in technicolour.....

Like many of the FOCs on this forum. I was there that day, too.Great article, thanks for sharing.
My Dad and Grandad were at the Newcastle game and ended up on the pitch, I always enjoyed hearing their stories about that day and the team. Sadly my Grandad didn't get to see any of our recent successes, but great for my Dad that they got to enjoy that one!
You lucky man..Like many of the FOCs on this forum. I was there that day, too.
18 years old, still at school, about to take my "A" levels, yet I only missed 5 games that season, 3 at home and 2 away.
I watched the match from the Leazes End, and, yes, ended up on the pitch at full time. I also saw it in full colour, via my Mk 1 eyeballs, which didn't need glasses in those days.
A perfect day. Your first time is always the most memorable.
