When asked if he was willing to “denounce white supremacists” he said “stand BACK and stand by” though Wallace asked if he would ask them to stand “down”. I think Trump didn’t recall the exact words. Trump said “Sure I’m willing to do that [denounce them] but almost everything I’m seeing is from the left . . .” and Wallace and Biden said, “Do it then” and “Say it, sir.” Then Trump asked, “Who do you want me to denounce?” Biden and Wallace said “White supremacists. The Proud Boys.” And then Trump said, “I would say ‘stand back and stand by.’” He never said “Yes, I denounce them.”
So make of all that what you will. I don’t think “I’m willing to denounce them” is the same as “I denounce them”.
