When asked if he was willing to “denounce white supremacists” he said “stand BACK and stand by” though Wallace asked if he would ask them to stand “down”. I think Trump didn’t recall the exact words. Trump said “Sure I’m willing to do that [denounce them] but almost everything I’m seeing is from the left . . .” and Wallace and Biden said, “Do it then” and “Say it, sir.” Then Trump asked, “Who do you want me to denounce?” Biden and Wallace said “White supremacists. The Proud Boys.” And then Trump said, “I would say ‘stand back and stand by.’” He never said “Yes, I denounce them.”

So make of all that what you will. I don’t think “I’m willing to denounce them” is the same as “I denounce them”.

It's just so hard to choose a winner between the guy who encouraged white supremacist gangs to terrorize people and the guy who didn't do that

Sorry, I don’t see it. “I am willing to” is not the same as “I do.” “I am willing to, but . . .” is even less affirmative.

Now originally when asked, the language used was “Are you willing to?” from Wallace so Trump says “Sure, I’m willing to.” But when challenged directly by Biden and Wallace (“Do it then” and “Say it sir”) he didn’t.

I am willing to do lots of things that I don’t actually do. I was reminded of The Princess Bride — “If you didn’t say it, you didn’t do it.”

And the Proud Boys themselves clearly don’t think they were denounced. Nor have I found so far any immediate focus group feedback on line that indicates participants saw it the way you do (i.e. those participants were not influenced by a media narrative).

The most charitable thing I can say is that if Trump had wanted to be very clear he easily could have been but he wasn’t.

He literally answered the question as phrased.

"Are you willing to denounce these white supremacist groups"

"Sure"

"...and ask them to stand down at rallies to not interfere...."

"Yes they should stand down, stand by..."

He said exactly what they asked him to say and its still not enough.

For starters I'm a registered Republican so he technically is "my side" sadly enough.

Most importantly, he did not denounce them. "Will you denounce white supremacy" is just about the easiest question a person can be asked, and he danced around the subject and immediately started blaming the left, as he always does.

I've noticed that attempting to force people into speech is becoming a common problem in the US left. BLM do the same. Very authoritarian idea.

Something that the Proud Boys have taken as a call to arms and to be ready when needed.
The very opposite of a reaction to a condemnation.

Replying "Sure" to "are you willing to denounce them" is not actually denouncing them.

This might be one of those situations where you should look at what the racists think Trump said, because they think he's just put them on stand by for war.

So the media, the left and the far right have all interpreted his words the same way, and you're fighting to pretend he said something else.
