What a game Tonga v Samoa was. They've just made the point in the BBC coverage that the TV can't quite convey the physical intensity and that even the hardened league fans were wincing at some of the impacts! Was it as brutal as it seemed @Psychedelic Casual ?
Thought Tonga were going to take it in the later stages but didn't quite have clear enough heads to get it over the line.
Suspect the semi won't be quite as easy as the group game was for England but still think we'll have enough.
I was bang on the half way line of the South Stand (same stand as the cameras) and it was almost as if you could feel some of the hits.
Defence for both sides was immense.
Good game. A bit disappointed that both teams were a little bit one-out and lacked moving the ball around (I know it rained at times). And it was very noticeable that both teams’ packs were blowing out of their arses even in the first half!
But that gives me confidence for England to beat Samoa next week in the semifinal. It will be a very hard game though. It certainly will be nothing like the opening game at Newcastle though. Samoa are a competitive different outfit to then.
My lad went and said it was one of the best games he has been to at Halliwell.
On another note, I read that Bob Wanbon died today. Played 160 times for Warrington and 80 times for St Helen’s in the 60’s and 70’s! A very good crown green bowler in the Warrington leagues too as I think I found out once :-)
