2022 World Cup Discussion

Did the American Supreme Court not overturn Roe v Wade in 2022 and remove the right to abortion in all American States? If so talk about gross hypocrisy of our BBC and media mafia ignoring womens rights at home.

Shocked the BBC and its coverage. The idiots in the studio so outraged yet in the host country taking the money.

Seems like the two issues script prepared by the BBC for their mouthpiece muppets will continue to annoy many.

On a night when there are killings in America they forgot to focus on their own doorstep before preaching.

They were never willing to accept the World Cup not going to one their buddy nations and this tripe will continue for the rest of the tournament. Shearer et al should have just gone to a gay bar and not Qatar.
I'm wondering why you keep referring to the USA as 'at home' and 'on their own doorstep.' Has the BBC moved or something?

The right to having an abortion in the USA has not been removed due to Roe v Wade being over turned. It is now available(or not) according to the law of each state.
Yeah, and people are acting like there hasn't been a huge amount of criticism about that. Arguably far more than the World Cup being hosted in Qatar.

There are currently twelve states in the US that still outlaw abortion. And do you know why? Because the bible says so. That's the land of the free, decreeing law on theological foundations. Some might find that as morally repugnant as prohibiting homosexual acts. So where's the faux outrage/virtue signalling bullshit in regards to the US hosting the next World Cup?

On the spectrum of human shitness/corruption, Qatar can legitimately be claimed to be higher than us; but make no mistake, we are on that spectrum. But the UK, along with every other Western utopia, benefits from very pretty window dressing.
Absolute drivel.
As if you can equate a few states banning abortion to torturing and imprisoning LGBT people, unreal.
What planet do you inhabit ?

No. It didn’t remove the right in all states, it overturned it at a Federal level and left it up to individual states to make that determination.

But you’re right, it was a backwards step.

It says apostasy is a capital offence but has never been carried out (same as UAE and fuck all to do with stoning which was the original “funny” joke)
It also says later in the same article...

As of 2014, certain provisions of the Qatari Criminal Code allows punishments such as flogging and stoning to be imposed as criminal sanctions.

Presumably they have been superseded other laws but are still technically on the books in the same way that those 'legal to shoot a Welshman in Chester' stuff still exists?

But yeah, let's be honest, as someone who's lived abroad since 2010, I'm fully aware of the habit of ignorant foreign journalists writing with authority about something that they've read a bad translation of on Wikipedia. And let's be honest, in a lot of these countries, what the law says is irrelevant anyway, because the thing about dictatorships tends to be the extrajudicial punishments of 'problematic' people, or lack of proper legal representation for marginalized groups, rather than what the law says.

Having said that, I'm equally wary of upper middle-class expats who argue that it's fine because they've never had any issues getting a beer or being drunk in public. It's about as reliable as taking white people's opinion about how much day-to-day racism there is in society.
