2022 World Cup Discussion

Didn't catch it - any specific observations of note?
It was like watching/listening to one of our match reports but turbo charged.

Just a very general anti Muslim/Arab rant, anti gay/alcohol, now much did they bribe FIFA etc, it was pathetic and very wrong.

Maybe they should have done more when Qatar was awarded the tournament or have the debate after but now is the time to watch the football and enjoy and debate that.

2022. So we have progressed quicker than Qatar in terms of societal norms/allowances. But two things:

1.) Qatar as an independent state has only existed for around fifty years, before then it was passed around, pillar to post, even possessed in the 20th century by the angelic British Empire. It's a young country, and thus it's primitive ideals are still very much ingrained; many Middle Eastern countries are the same for the aforementioned reason. Britain, as a nation, has had centuries to iron out any perceived injustices and democratise generally.

2.) And this is the big one, which a lot of people are conveniently overlooking, Qatar is an ISLAMIC STATE. Homosexuality, whether we like it or not, is outlawed by their scripture and moreover frowned upon as a cultural/social phenomenon. It's not for us to tell them to change a key facet of their religion and way of life because they happen to be hosting a football tournament. Everyone now knows this, so if you're that offended, have zero involvement with the World Cup.

There are currently twelve states in the US that still outlaw abortion. And do you know why? Because the bible says so. That's the land of the free, decreeing law on theological foundations. Some might find that as morally repugnant as prohibiting homosexual acts. So where's the faux outrage/virtue signalling bullshit in regards to the US hosting the next World Cup?

On the spectrum of human shitness/corruption, Qatar can legitimately be claimed to be higher than us; but make no mistake, we are on that spectrum. But the UK, along with every other Western utopia, benefits from very pretty window dressing.
An old adage but a very appropriate one, when in Rome do as the Romans do.

ALL country's have laws and customs that some find offensive, simple, if your not happy don't go to them.

I live in a country that if you criticize the monarchy you go to jail for 30 years, so either accept that law or move on.

Oh from the Daily fucking Mail…

Stoning is not legal and has never happened in Qatar:

So wind your neck back in and stop emulating RAWK and their own attitudes and stereotypes toward our owners. Also pick a better newspaper to read.
You really are a complete arse.
I said I was quoting the press and here it is in the press.
"No press would dare make that lazy racist joke"
That's 'no' press.
Yet here it is In the press mentioning stoning is legal, something I haven't questioned one way or the other.
Unfortunately it seems this particular press doesn't meet your high standards.
Stoning, human rights, oil, corruption is all part of huge list of the things Qatar and us get accused of on a weekly basis, the truth doesn't come in to it as far as the press and other football fans are concerned.
So like many City fans including on here we make light of it, many of which happened today and all without lazily throwing around the racist card, except for you that is.

You made the lame joke that someone playing for Equador would be stoned rather than be allowed to score. The press haven’t made that joke.

You think that racist joke, about a practice that has never occurred in Qatar (but has in one of its equally brown neighbours i.e. Saudi) is fine and funny?

So when the World Cup is in the US and they play Belgium, will you joke how the Belgian players may be given a lethal injection or sent to the electric chair? No, of course not, because that won’t fit with your racial stereotyping.

Having said that, I'm equally wary of upper middle-class expats who argue that it's fine because they've never had any issues getting a beer or being drunk in public. It's about as reliable as taking white people's opinion about how much day-to-day racism there is in society.
What have I argued is fine?

I think Qatar is a terrible choice for the World Cup. I think their actions in banning alcohol in the stadium is ridiculous and their choice of doing so two days before the World Cup is even more abhorrent. The World Cup shouldn’t be anywhere near that country.

But I’ve spoken honestly to correct some of the idiotic reporting from the press as to what will get someone locked up over there if that someone is drunk.

Which is what "justified" cricket and rugby teams going to apartheid-era South Africa for too many years till Basil D'Oliveira showed it was wrong. A sporting boycott turned out to be one of the ways the rest of the world told them to change their ways. Maybe Harry Kane's protest is in the same spirit.

Didn’t say you had. But I’ve heard plenty from other people in recent weeks.
