2022 World Cup Discussion

I'm sat in a bar in Atlanta Airport en route to Philadelphia.
The complete indifference of Yanks to "soccer" is staggering. Fuck knows how this country gets to host the world cup twice since England has.....

The bar was reasonably full with the game on 5 screens around the place
The US score and approx 5 or 6 people let out a gentle "whoop" as the others looked up from their phones and then back to their phones.
The Dutch 3rd goal received 2 quiet groans. Those on their phones didn't even notice.....

Doesn't seem to excite much comment that the yanks got soccerball in 1994 and co-hosting again in 2026. Mind you Germany hosted it in 1974 and 2006, Mexico got in 1970, 1986 and co-hosts in 2026.

It is a pity the yanks are getting the greatest show on earth and I'm not sure many are arsed.

Maybe we need to learn lessons from the 2012 Olympic bid? I think if ticketing and stewarding issues can be addressed, we'd put on an amazing tournament! Probably more important things to address before sinking shitloads of taxpayers cash into a vanity project.

Mexico hosted in 1986 at the last minute as Brazil had to pull out

Edited for accuracy! ;)

The more I watch, the more I'm convinced that Brazil is going to lift the trophy. I'm not a fan of Brazil - but they're solid on defense and have a decent enough offense.
If Pele dies, it could give them extra impetus and incentive. But I've yet to see a team I don't think England could beat. We've been solid in defence, and have some great creative players and goalscorers. For me, it all hinges on whether Southgate goes for the Wales formation of the USA formation in the remaining games. I suspect he will go for safety, which will be our undoing.

My favorites to win are France, with Brasil, Spain and England also in with a good chance. I don't think Van Gaal's Netherlands will progress much further. I think his defensive approach will let him down eventually against the more attacking teams, but I wouldn't be averse to them winning it, given the number of times they have lost the final.

It would need nice for Messi to finish his career with a World Cup to his name. Nice also for Alvarez, and Otamendi, who I've always admired as a no nonsense player who just gets on with the game. No fuss, no trouble on or off the field, no hassle to his clubs or managers or teammates. A good, honest pro.

It's a shame that you were in an airport during the match. Most of the local bars here in Philadelphia were standing room only by 9:00am, many had breakfast specials and game after parties planned. I don't believe that an airport at 9am on a Saturday morning is a very precise sampling of the sporting public.
