I was thinking of creating a new thread to discuss Qatar and the issue of holding the World Cup there. It seems worth having. Perhaps this thread is enough.
For what it's worth, my own position has been undeviating, since it was first given to Qatar. It was a decision purely determined by commercial interests (with a strong suspicion of kickbacks to determine the vote, and general corruption within FIFA), with no consideration of any genuine footballing tradition. It was not in the interests of any international supporters who may wish to attend it, nor in the interests of players. Qatar claims that it represents the ‘Arab world’, and that the Arab world was rewarded by its being chosen. There are other Arab countries that would have had a far better claim to being chosen.
In Qatar homosexuality is punishable by death. It seems that the penalty is not often applied, if at all, but imprisonment (and possibly torture in prison) definitely is. It is pure hypocrisy for players to wear rainbow laces, or the captain to wear a rainbow armband on a given day of the year, and suchlike, and go and play in such a place.
For the first time since I first got interested in footy — that is, ’66 — I shall personally not watch so much as one minute of this tournament. I made that decision several years back, and I'll stand by it. And in so far as it's possible, I shall avoid knowing scores, matches, in short, everything. That will of course be very difficult, short of going having a complete media blackout for the duration of it.
I do not expect people to agree with me. Everybody has a line that they draw. Mine is here. To be clear, I'd take very much the same position if it had been attributed to the UAE. But I do think the issue merits discussion. As did the holding of it in Argentina in ’78.
