2022 World Cup Discussion

Yep, it's pretty much a traditional thing. I would guess if you go back and look through the past world cup tournaments, you may well find a couple where that didn’t happen. But they'll be the exception. Indeed, wasn't this game moved in the schedule, to be the first?

* edit* I see @I'm With Stupid has already said the same thing.
It’s only the traditional thing since 2006.

It used to be the winners of the last tournament that played first.

BBC online today showed a vid of the fans camp. £175.00 a night to sleep in a tent and only desk fan to keep you cool. A France fan had paid £2500 up front for the privilege but once he saw what he was getting said fuck that I’m booking into an hotel.

I don't get it. I thought the UAE states needed tourism for when their oil started running out. So how have they managed to offer such awful accomodation?

How long does somebody have to house an asylum seeker for it to count in your world?

You doubted he took one in, got shown you were wrong and now seem to have set some random arbitrary limit on it.

To be fair, the lad he let stay with him was a law student, already studying in the UK, so he was here legally on a student visa and obviously already living here if he was currently studying law here.

So basically he let a law student doss at his house for 20 days. Loads of people do home stays for foreign students. It’s not exactly some bloke coming off a boat over the channel he’s opened his doors to.

Nice bit of PR by Gary, but not exactly what he said on the tin when he first proposed it.

Not saying his heart isn’t in the right place but look at the reality of it instead of the headline.

It's not a traditional thing, no. My mistake. But the host nation has played the opening game in 1934, 1950, 1958, 1962, 1970, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and this year. In some of the earlier tournaments, there was more than one game on the opening day. And in the era from 1974 to 2002 it was, as you correctly said, the holders that took part in the opening game. Since the 2010 tournament, it has reverted back to the host country.

No, it‘s not what his haters wanted. He didn’t have to do anything. He chose to help someone.

Traditions have to start somewhere!

I think most people would prefer a banger of a first match, like Cameroon Argentina, rather than the hosts, but I guess you are guaranteed a good atmosphere. (Well, who knows what it’ll be like in Qatar)
