2022 World Cup Discussion

Driving home so only heard radio commentary, and genuinely can't remember any description of activity on the pitch for entire 90 minutes, just inane chit chat about off-field stuff, discussion about individual players (mainly Ecuadorians in Prem) and random stats.

So either it was a really dreadful game or BBC commentary gone to pot.

Those Qatari gays should go and live in Colorado or Florida, where they’ll be perfectly safe.…..

At least 600 (likely many more) LGBT murdered in the USA in the last 20 years including 5 today and 49 in one mass shooting in 2016.

375 transgendered people murdered last year mostly in Central and South America with 33% murdered in Brazil alone.

This is not to defend the Qatari position but if the UK/world media think there’s only this problem in Qatar, as usual they’re very much mistaken.

Just to be very clear you are comparing totally different scales of situations. Some sick fucking lunatic has shot a load of gay people in America.

Being Gay in Qatar is still a punishable offense by the state.

I'm getting tired off all this tit for tat whataboutism at this point.

The Iranian captain is quoted as condemning Iranian authority and is blaming them for the rioting and deaths in that country. He plays for AEK Athens so I can't see him not going straight back there after the competition is over, for them. If he goes back to Iran I don't expect we'd be seeing him again.

There's a huge difference in right wing nutters indiscriminately targeting gay people, and gay people being targeted by the state. Anyone who can't see the difference is beyond reason.

Can't shake the feeling that something abominable is going to happen at this World Cup that'll be remembered forever.

Maybe I'm being melodramatic. Just feels like this is building up to one of football's big tragedies. So much that can go wrong and so much that already has.

If nobody's died in a month then I'll call it a relief.

Harry Maguire to win Golden Boot?

That's nothing new. I stopped listening to 5live football commentary for that very same reason about 10 years ago

Prestige, I guess. There are some decent Middle Eastern teams out there: Iran, Turkey, Israel. Qatar, though? As if. how many Qatari footballers can anyone even name?
After watching that shite today a Qatari professional footballer does not exist.

Taken to the cleaners by Ecuador ffs.

Looks like Kane and Bale will wear the armbands regardless. Van Djyk for Holland and the Denmark captain too.

This is interesting....

That is just a stupid report.

Does he not recognize they walked to the nearest hotel to get a half time pint(and pie?) and they realized by the time they had supped up, they wouldn’t get back to the game before the final whistle, so they stayed in the bar(with a/c).

Totally understandable !

Remind me what year we are in now?
2022. So we have progressed quicker than Qatar in terms of societal norms/allowances. But two things:

1.) Qatar as an independent state has only existed for around fifty years, before then it was passed around, pillar to post, even possessed in the 20th century by the angelic British Empire. It's a young country, and thus it's primitive ideals are still very much ingrained; many Middle Eastern countries are the same for the aforementioned reason. Britain, as a nation, has had centuries to iron out any perceived injustices and democratise generally.

2.) And this is the big one, which a lot of people are conveniently overlooking, Qatar is an ISLAMIC STATE. Homosexuality, whether we like it or not, is outlawed by their scripture and moreover frowned upon as a cultural/social phenomenon. It's not for us to tell them to change a key facet of their religion and way of life because they happen to be hosting a football tournament. Everyone now knows this, so if you're that offended, have zero involvement with the World Cup.

There are currently twelve states in the US that still outlaw abortion. And do you know why? Because the bible says so. That's the land of the free, decreeing law on theological foundations. Some might find that as morally repugnant as prohibiting homosexual acts. So where's the faux outrage/virtue signalling bullshit in regards to the US hosting the next World Cup?

On the spectrum of human shitness/corruption, Qatar can legitimately be claimed to be higher than us; but make no mistake, we are on that spectrum. But the UK, along with every other Western utopia, benefits from very pretty window dressing.
