2022 World Cup Discussion

I get why Southgate would want to use Mount as I don’t think he knows how to structure the team to get the best out of Foden (or any of the attacking players to be honest) so reverts to being more rigid in formation and formulaic in the play.

It’s a real shame though. Spain won the WC when Pep was managing Barca and Germany won it when he was managing Bayern, both times the national teams adapted due to their coaches at the time buying into and being capable of setting their teams up to play in a similar way. Southgate played lip service to it in his first couple years but his limitations are really stifling how good we could be.

I am sick to death of this WC already.

The bollocks our press keep coming out with, it seems the bbc build yesterday was very politically I believe.…….
Ex players Shearer et al. Now football pundits going on and on about human rights in Qatar I was waiting for some politicians to be wheeled into the studio! I turned it on to watch football, if I wanted to listen to human rights abuses I could have had it wall to wall on the news.

Well you’re not wrong

And that probably raises the question of how many footballers are invested in the causes, or do they just feel pressure to show that they are?

I mean Harry Kane wears his arm band, but does he really care that much about gay rights in other places? Does he sit at home and think about it? Does he dedicate any of his personal time to educating himself on such matters to campaign about?

Or is it just a given that a high profile person feels they have to or are advised to do such things?

I don’t know the man, but I’m going to guess it’s more of the latter

And that’s essentially why most people will take a backwards step when it comes down to it.

At the end of the day, they’re just lads that wanna play football, but in this day and age, you’re expected to toe the line of other causes too. I mean look at politicians, the likes of Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden did big U-Turns on their previous beliefs about gay marriage (although the media won’t show their old thoughts), simply because they have to, to win votes. Do you think they really care that much? No it’s just public image. Just like footballers have to portray an image too.
It seems that high profile sports persona just cannot be allowed to practise their art in the arena. They have to take on board all the issues, initiatives, social ills of the world, protest at the causes thrown at them by the media and as far as the England team is concerned, er, come back with the trophy as well, which would prove that all the armbands, kneeling, and lip service were totally correct

Despite all the psychological input, head shrinking, seminars, bollocks 'n yap, Southgate is still frightened to death of losing.

Can’t get worked up about the armband fiasco. Palestinians have been living under occupation for generations in thst part of the world and we don’t give a fcuk (especially BBC panellists).

My preference would be to just focus on the football (when I can be bothered to watch it).

Harry has a big opportunity to show the World that Qatar's human rights are simply unacceptable. Would be up there with Jesse Owens in 36 and Tommie Smith in 68 - however the privileged, pampered, multi millionaire will bottle it and he and Southgate should forever be remembered as the spineless, self-serving, unprincipled cowards they are.

I'm wondering what the Sanctions were if they had gone ahead. As Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and the Dutch have also caved in now. The Danes had gone all in on highlighting this cause too.

Shouldn't matter - the whole world would think the worse of those issuing the sanctions - it would backfire on them massively given the outrage out there.
