2022 World Cup Discussion

Wold cup 94 was class for so many reasons. So many characters, great games etc final was shit but most are.

As I've said before. The 90s comps were fantastic and everything since has been shite.
Baggio, Romario, Maradona, Matthaeus, Hagi, Stoichkov, Valderamma, Bergkamp, Quinn…

Shame Gullit and Van Basten didn’t make it due to circumstances and if France and England qualified there would have been Gazza and Cantona.

Plus the razzmatazz of the USA hosting it made it colourful and eventful to say the least.

I work in Saudi at the minute and popped over to Qatar for a week and the atmosphere was great. The bars are packed with people from all over the world and the atmosphere around the grounds was great. Luckily I managed an England game as well as a few others.

I’m tempted to head back towards the end if we get there…

I thought Spain 82,Italia90,France 98,Korea,Japan 02 were good world cups everything since has been nothing to right home about. This one the best games have been the ones where the so called big European sides have struggled with the Asian and African sides.Belgium and Germany got what they deserved. Its a cup competition and as proved by the Dippers the best team does not always win the cup.Enjoy it for what it is.

Not only politics or religion though is it ? , everyone is not welcome in Qatar , i will let you work that one out
Who is not welcome?

It makes me laugh when the nation of "it's coming home" , the same Nation that hosted the Euros and witnessed it's own fans smashing there way into the stadium causing havoc having the audacity to humiliate Qatar.

I wonder how many crimes have been committed in Qatar during this tournament, I would imagine they could be counted on one hand, if not one finger.

It's a bit of a strange viewpoint for a football fan not to watch the world cup just because it's in Qatar. I get the issue of how it was awarded over "better" bids but the world cup could be in Altrincham ( as long as you could fit 6 50,000 stadiums in there) and the football would be the same. You don't need the best football for entertaining matches, just evenly matched teams with something to play for.

I'm not a world cup fan really but, from what I have seen, some of the games have been great, some not so much. All in all, a typical world cup.

Felt marginally guilty about wanting Costa Rica to also put Spain out last night because unlike Kev and Gundo, Rodri and Laporte are probably in a team capable of winning them WC medals. But overall I would have preferred the benefit of all 4 of those important players getting a decent amount of rest. Either way it was a decent night's entertainment that got me watching all the way through.

Sounds like it all kicked off on here last night with people telling people where they did/didn't come from? I know she's got time on her hands now but I hadn't realised Lady Hussey was a blue :-)

82 and 86 were rubbish too. A host of rule changes, particularly iro foul play, but also backpass etc, became a necessity.
Foul play was a problem and was rife in that era but it did not ruin either 82 or 86. There was a lot of great football played in both world cups notably by a truly magnificent Brazil team but france were aso extremely entertaining.Other teams like Denmark flourished breifly with entertaining football before being beaten by Spain in 86. Maradonna was at the peak of his very considerable powers.
No World cup or football tournament of any kind is ever perfect but neither of the 80's tournaments could be considered poor tournaments and for many were the best they have seen.

82 and 86 were fucking ace, much better than modern world cups.
It might just be the case that i was younger then and not such a boring old **** ha

There's about 500,000,000 arab people who are absolutely football mad and can't host a tournament because of security reasons or cost in their various countries.

We've seen Iran, Morrocco, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia all have excellent tournaments and massive support, it's clearly delivering them an opportunity they never usually get.

Besides, I think Qatar has football culture, it's just a tiny country. It's had a professional league for 50 years, before most of the money arrived.
So out of a total Arab population of 442m in the world 500m of them are football mad? Figures don’t work on both levels.

Ah yeah, perspective changes everything. And some people will tell you that the first division in the mid 80s was better than the current premier league. I'd disagree with them too.
