2023 Grand National

The football player stats were used for a comparison because this is a football forum and not one of us would stop watching football or want football banned because a “ number” of footballers died over a period of time . Meanwhile just 5 horses have died at the Grand National in the last 11 years and a few ignorant media driven politically motivated idiots want it banned ???
We live in a world of disinformation and sadly people are brainwashed by it .
I think you will find the protesters want it banned everywhere not just Aintree.
But protesting before the 2pm at Uttoxetter on a Tuesday afternoon isn't going.to be main news on the BBC.
They are protesting about the 200 a year (average) that are killed.

Compared to approximately 460,000 dogs in the UK and presumably far more cats.

Is it because horses are larger, they are competing in a sport or they have a jockey riding them that makes race horse fatalities more important?
I haven't seen anyone on here be blasé about cat and dog cruelty. Dog fighting is abhorrent. Any form or cruelty towards any animal is abhorrent.

But, unless I'm misinformed, dog fighting isn't televised in this country and is also illegal. Riding horses to death isn't. Which is why this thread is gaining the traction it is.

Couple of observations, as I haven't looked at the stats

Does that 200 include race horses that lose their life in the paddocks through freak injuries? Or do we not include them as they didn't die on track? Curious, because they've not died jumping a fence, but horses do lose their lives in the paddocks.

What does the 200 work out as a % of total horses that run through a year? 1 death is too many, but wouldn't mind knowing the stats on that. A bit of quick maths would tell me it's probably about 0.5% in the UK ie deaths/number of runners

What's an acceptable level (ideally zero, but it cant be) when the pros and cons of the sport are weighed up?

How is this politically motivated? I'm struggling with that one.
As i posted earlier. Highly respected horse racing journalists and racing tv presenters Lydia Hyslop and Graham Cunningham have written detailed articles this morning about the situation yesterday. Racing Post and Sporting Life going with the same information.
