He was a disaster yesterday, not sure why he started if Ake was fit.

He didn't know what to do against Spurs’ press and he was caught out a few times.

Lost his head and was lucky with that yellow card, anything could have happened with a challenge like that.

Not sure he’s left back material, definitely not right now against the big teams anyway.

Get him some minutes at LCB against the bottom 10 and we’ll see him grow in confidence.

I’m sure he’s going to be brilliant long term.

Neither did Walker, who got turned by Bryan Gil, of all people, a couple of times. I just feel like he is not the one to blame for today's result. He is getting used to the LB position in our system and still doing great in most of the games. He was underwhelming but still better than most of the team in the 2nd half, IMO.

Have to agree. When you think about the goals that were scored. One on the break where Doku should have just dealt with it. One from a shot in a very central position yet inexplicably not a centre back anywhere near him. The third he’s not even on the pitch.

I actually like the fact he seems to keep his head in positions where bringing people down would be a certain penalty or red card. Laporte fell into that trap all the time but Josko is at least smart enough to know when to let people go.

He wasn’t great yesterday but when the entire defence looks like it’s chasing it’s own tail I don’t think that is the fault of any one player. Walker wasn’t any better.

He’s also absolutely not slow, half of the trick with speed is about relative positioning to the players around you and having the right body shape to get the extra yard. Foden is brilliant at this which is why he seems to glide past players despite not being super big or athletic. Gvardiol is still feeling that side of things out, but he has a lot of quality and I have no doubt he will be a brilliant signing for us.

Probably not a left-back but he's what, 21? And he's in his first season. Got more than enough time to learn. Has all the attributes and, unlike Mangala who had all the attributes but no chance of fitting them all together, has already shown that he's got a solid head on his shoulders and will become a more complete defender.

Paying €90m for a good CB prospect and then expecting him to play left back in a disorganised defence. Madness.

He won't develop into anything but a Jack of all trades in those circumstances. He needs to be playing in a CB pair in a back four if we're going to see a top player.

So, when can we call Gvardiol a flop?

There's nothing special about him..
Most people want to sell him, so just calling him a flop is almost kind. It will be interesting to see the upswing in City’s performance when he’s gone.

I do think he’s played at “the City level” in several games - Newcastle and Man U spring to mind but there are others. And during those games he slotted in well to the best defense in the world.

Also, defending is much more about the system rather than any individual skill level and it’s clear the whole system is having problems right now.

Bought as a ball playing CB but gets stuck at LB. I imagine this is Pep keeping him out of the firing line while he learns our systems, passages of play.

Would be good to see him given a go as the CB/CM against Red Star. See what he's learned.

Judging by the comments, I must have blinkers on where he's concerned. other than a stupid yellow, I had no issue with him at all today. Good solid 7/10 no thrills performance in my eyes. We were asking him to play as a narrow 3 then go wide to make a 4 when Akanji gets back in as we do with walker, walker can do it because he's so rapid, gvardiol isn't slow but is nowhere near walker pace so it shows just how much we ask them to do.

He will play most of this season at fullback. That's where peps going to develop him. Left back is like the primary school of peps education, it's a less risky and easier position to learn and excel in and only when he masters that will we see him progress to playing as a centre back or doing the midfield hybrid role.

Peps not going to chuck him in at cb anytime soon. Besides, who we playing left back if gvardiol is centre half? Peps already said Ake cannot play every game right now.
Good post. Dead rubber v Red Star coming up. Give him a trial see where he's at. Gomez can go LB.

A trial? Bloody hell, have some faith in the lad.

He's an established international, played in a World Cup tournament, and cost City over £75m. I think we're a long way past the trial stage!

I'd play him alongside Dias at CB against Villa, with Ake in the left back role.

Really cultured player. Lovely eye for a pass. Does not have the speed for a left back. Everybody can see it.
The Left Back Problem goes on.
This left back problem is a joke now and needs sorting . Yes ok as people we won the treble but that was last year and now it’s history . We can salvage this and I’m sure we will but this title is going to be one hell of a battle .

ah so he’s in primary school now. i usually see a) doesn’t trust him as cb yet or b) ake’s injury prone so who else to rotate at lb. interesting post, i’m obviously not a pep expert.

the problem is, no amount of coaching and hard work and learning will make him have walker’s pace.

he’s already the public enemy number one after yesterday’s game even though none of the goals were his errors. one of the contributors to one was ranked high in the man of the match thread yesterday. ;)

people were pissed off about him even starting even though pep said ake cannot play every game. i guess the club’s media team is keeping an eye on social
media and he’ll be told to get a bodyguard soon. :D
