24 | Joško Gvardiol - 2024/25

If Ake were fit, would Pep push him into the Rodri role? I certainly think he could handle it.
Easily. He’s more talented than Akanji and dare I say Stones, and Pep’s played them there (one got MOTM in the CL final doing so and I’d argue Gvardiol is another level to even Stones with the ball at his feet). I also think he’s talented enough to play in attacking mid or left wing.

No offence to any centre halves around world football, but he’s got too many excellent aspects to his attacking game to play centre half.

Overall I think the position he plays in for City is perfect for him. With the possession we enjoy, he gets to play as a left wing back, defensive mid, attacking mid and left winger every game.

What a fantastic future the lad has...and just 22 years old.
I think he’s the best young player around.

I know you have to factor in Yamal’s age but he’s got a lot to learn that kid, he may very well end up being a serial Balon d’Or winner in his 20s but you look around world football at the moment and Gvardiol looks the most complete Under 23 player.

One of the big differencs between Rodri and Stones/Akanji is speed of choosing a forward pass. Others can pick the right pass but it takes a fraction longer and in that time the moment is gone and the next best pass is a cautious one.

As good as our squad is we don't have many with this instinctive speed of thought in midfield. If we unearth it in anyone it'd be awesome. If it is in Gvardiol even better given his physical attributes too.

I'd be scared of taking him out of LB at the minute because of how much he's excelling in that role. Why mess with things? I love Ake, but he's not as good as Gvardiol is in terms of the attacking side of the game which is how we play.

I'd much rather see them rotate but with Ake being used more as a CB again.

This time last year half this forum didn’t think he was good enough to play anywhere here! I do think Pep would go easy on him and give him time to settle before (if ever) he throws him into the tumbler that is our midfield. I think that’s a role that needs a lot of games and maturity, not just skills.

Gareth Bale began life as a fullback . . .
