I thought he was great. Barring that mistake against a clearly faster younger guy. His movement and decisions on the ball may have even been superior to Kyle or Cancelo's.

But that error still is his

I think you called it right in the Laporte thread. He gambled on getting tight and winning it early, just as he had done to get the turnover to set up our third goal

He probably assumed it was worth the risk with fully half the pitch between him and the goal and presumably some cover behind him that for whatever reason failed to materialize

Other than Kev he's our most "risk/reward" passer, which I prefer to be honest, so it was lovely to see him on the pitch. The goal was his fault but not his fault alone and when it emerges that Laporte was approached by shady people with suitcases full of cash prior to this game, don't be too surprised.

My first reaction was that the Vinicius goal was his fault. Having thought about it though, it was almost a carbon copy of the situation where he nicked in front of Vinicius and ended up providing an assist.

I suppose he could have took a yellow card by holding onto his shirt once he'd been turned but that all started in the oppositions half and he hadn't been on long. He still should have took the card but I understand the hesitation.

Regardless of that mistake, there was still a lot to do from there. It shouldn't have led to free run from his own half, all the way to the 6 yard box and a shot unchallenged. Laporte should have gone to close Vinicius down and Zinchenko should have helped make his mind up by communicating he was covering Benzema. That might have bought enough time to get Dias and company back in position. He might have found Benzima with a cross regardless, but at least that would have give City more of a chance keeping the ball out of the net on that attack.

What I failed to understand with the "error" was he didn't do what he always does, smile nicely at the referee and step across without ever intending to play the ball, he's made that his thing for years. I think he thought the same after the goal too, but Ederson could have done better too.

We can’t defend the mistake, it was his and his alone. Was still pretty tidy and done a job under the circumstances

Harsh - he got off a good shot which unfortunately was straight at the keeper.
Benzema scored exact same goal from twice the distance, but I’ll go with “harsh”…even though it was a sitter on his left, which is his preferred foot, whereas it’s Benzema’s weak side!

I’m not as enamored as some over Fernandinho’s stint at RB, either, but I’ll leave it all alone.

Anyone slagging Dihno for his emergency RB performance should give their head a wobble.
