For that reason I'm surprised that the fullbacks weren't instructed to tuck inside more to prevent the very simple outballs that Spurs had to their front three every team they won the ball back
You have to remember that if Mendy and Cancelo come inside then we'd be giving away a ton of space like we did in the first half against Leicester.

I don't think tactics lost it, personally. After 20 minutes we were second to every loose ball. Whether that's fitness or motivation I don't know. Our opening 3 league games last season all had the same problems as we had today; good start, weak middle and weaker finish.

So everyone happy when he signed a one year extension, Matchday and this thread after ONE fuckin game it was a mistake.

Get a fuckin grip.

I love the guy.. but there were signs last season but the good defiantly still outweighed the bad.. but then again age is a sudden tipping point. The good thing is we will know pretty quickly as you can’t hide your legs going.. 2/3 sluggish performances on the bounce will be evidence time has caught up with him and his “use” becomes limited to “experience” in seeing out tight games and benefiting the dressing room.

hopefully this was just rustiness and natural lack of fitness.. and he will get past Christmas before his legs go.. but… his legs will probably go this season.

Did anyone else notice him jogging back when Spurs had an attack towards the end of the first half? Rodri would be absolutely hammered for that.

He looked out on his feet second half-but v little support throughout
I'm not sure we can play him on his own in these games now.
I'm glad he signed for another year - but needs to be played sparingly when Rodri needs a rest, or when we choose to play 2 DM.
Just an opinion

I think today cried out for Gundogan to play next to him and give Grealish a free no 10 role. The amount of space Spurs had on the counter was alarming.

Yeah I actually like that idea - it also means Sterling and Grealish are more than 4/5 yards apart.
I'm not saying Sterling and Grealish won't work, it's gonna take some work though

No he wasn't. Exposed a bit? maybe. Terrible? Give your beanhead a wobble.

First half certainly he was excellent.

He was shit.. good first 20 minutes maybe (but so did everyone) but sloppy and slow to react beyond that 20 minute period.. he was useless.

He should have been moved on last season. An incredible player but he's 36, he shouldn't be in the side now. He's regressed physically

I'll have to watch the game back but I felt he did okay. And I was in the "he should leave" camp in May, go out on top.

If not then blame the Guinness. Thought he cut out the play well and was given some poor service from Mendy. We will come again, Grealish will be a star for us

He dawdled on the ball a lot.. and was slow to react a few times before the goal and then obviously was one of those at fault for the goal. He probably wasn’t helped by Grealish and Sterling getting used to playing together. Grealish was trying to occupy a space too close to Sterling which left a larger pocket of space for Fern to cover and obviously he also had to deal playing with Mendy.. which is never easy.

Agree Grealish will be a star for us… just needs to get used to playing slightly more central.. once it clicks alongside Kev and sliding the likes of Foden, Raz and Mahrez.. who hopefully can look to feed Kane we will be deadly.

Back to Fern, he will definitely need to be used sparingly.. so I do feel Grealish has been brought as a midfielder rather than a winger.

He should not be starting 2 games in a row. Looked well off the pace against Leicester and his passing and decision making was poor today. This final year he should be used sparingly. A new dm is most certainly needed for next season.
