He had a spell of about five minutes half way through the second half where he played well. Other than that he was abysmal.
I was delighted with this because it said to me that Mahrez is exactly what he should be - a back-up. It would have been so easy for Pep to stick Sterling up front and give Mahrez his RW spot.Agree 100%. He barely touched the ball in the first half and he knew it, hence the daft greedy attempts at goal just before half time. Maybe noticed one instance in the second half of him dropping deep to link up with midfield, something Jesus for example does all game when he plays.
To be fair I’m glad he was the F9 despite him obviously not being suited to carrying the role out properly, at least it meant we had Foden/Sterling wide stretching their back line which is far more use to us tactically.
But compare Mahrez contribution to our other players who have played as an F9 in the past (KDB at the weekend, Bernardo, even Foden) and it’s obvious how far off the required level he was. Pep wouldn’t have hauled him off otherwise.
I still think his "offside" goal from Rodri's pass was onside.
I mean he had an assist, a key pass created for another goal, and a wrongly disallowed goal with a nice finish.Classic Mahrez performance tbh. Couple of great moments that had decisive results, but poor the rest of the time and not in sync with the rest of the team.
