27 | Matheus Nunes - 2024/25

Not the cleanest game technically, but glad he got his goal. drifts in and out but is willing to run past a man without a ball which we miss alot. Not sure he'll be here long enough to get it but handy to have around.

Hopefully an offer will come in for him in January and we can get a Rodri replacement or back-up

So Pep said he was the best player in the world. Perhaps he meant the best at running with the ball (progressive runs).

Happy he finally got his goal.

I think people make too much out of his non-celebration. Just seems like a guy who's not too happy with himself.
He is not too happy with his situation. And he shouldn't be. He is a far better player than the number of minutes he is getting.

I have no issues with him not smiling.

All that said, I think he is a fantastic player in the wrong system. We slow the pace down too much to keep possession. And he is a lot like Halaand in that he wants to get forward quickly, make runs into space an expect a quick pass to come.

He is at his best when everything is frantic. The walking pace tippy tappy stuff just stifles his advantages.

He made so many runs and quick cuts yesterday and the ball never came. And then he gets back behind the line and then the ball comes when he is stood still. Giving him little option but to just pass back or sideways.

I like him. Not a smooth player. But has an edge.

Played well yesterday. Few mistakes but did a lot of good things aswell. I still think there is a player in there. Like how he drives forward and he's willing to be direct and create things. The misgiving I have with him is his touch doesn't seem to be up to the standard of his teammates. Won't write him off though, he's improved this year in my opinion and if another midfielder goes down we'll fucking need him so let's get behind the lad and give him a proper chance.

Interesting take. When he signed Pep seemed to be wanting ball carrying players - see Kovacic and Doku - but he has not really changed how we play to utilise them. I wonder whether this was an experiment that did not work and was discarded or whether Pep is still planning some new tactics that utilise this type of player.

We play slow build up reactively, it's how we deal with low blocks, it's just we face them so often it feels like our default tactic. When the opposition is happy to cede possession and defend their third of the pitch in numbers it's impossible for a player to pick the ball up and drive 30 yards, the space just isn't there.

Winger for me. He’s got the pace, engine, defensive nous and attacking threat to be there. And it takes his on-the-ball riskiness away from central areas which is obviously why he’s not been trusted there.

Would allow Grealish to get more time centrally too which would be fantastic.

Could defo be an option. Jack more inside and Nunes as an option more on the wing.

He’s got something. Think he’s had about 5 assists and the 1 goal now. So he’s capable of contributing.

Think it’s been difficult for him being played in all the different roles and not having a consistent run as well which is no fault of his own.

Unlike Phillips he does seem to have the touch and quicker ball control needed for our team.
