I might be straying into biography-writer levels of self-indulgent guesswork here but when he came on I got the sense that he was absolutely not going to let his club get embarrassed. There was a sense of "not on my watch" about it.

I'm guessing Pep put him on because it was the closest he could get to guaranteeing we wouldn't concede a second.
Exactly my thoughts when Pep put him on. ‘Go fix it Ruben’.

And actually, although he was a bit raw, there was nothing fundamentally wrong with Nastasic that couldn't have been ironed out, in my opinion. I suspect there was some other problem there, but I've never been able to get to the bottom of it.

years back, two random guys sat in front of us, we’d had our seats years and the same people were always sat there, one game these two blokes were there. Said they were guests of Nastasic, they said he couldn’t get fit due to a niggling knee injury that wasn’t too bad he couldn’t play, but he was not at 100%. The concern was, no one could identify it. No idea if it’s true, but it’s always stuck with me, as he looked class early on.

Boateng has never been the best CB in the world, and we've not missed Nastasic or Savic. All have done ok, Boateng continually found out at the highest levels, Savic in the Simeone system protecting him at every opportunity and Nastasic has found his level.
Agree about Savic, forgot to add in my post that I didn't think he would ever thrive in our systems over the years. My point is that he turned out a lot better than anyone watching him for us would believe at the time.

Disagree about Boateng. Absolute Rolls Rouyce of a defender for a few years, and the perfect Pep CB. Messi made a mockery out of him, but Messi can do that to anyone.

Not sure about Nastasic, he definitely had ability, but as you said there is a good chance he has found his level. Have a feeling our defence the last decade wouldn't have been worse with him as an option, but all in all we haven't done to bad the past 10 years really :)

Boateng's probably the most overrated player in the last decade, when push came to shove he turned into the half-hearted mard-arse he always was here. Messi's humiliation of him was just the proof that even his greatest proponents couldn't avoid.

Haha, you are mixing Mangala with Nastasic.

I'm glad you cleared that up. I spent a long time wondering what he meant.
There was an important game with Chelsea, the one in which Torres scored an idiocy of a goal right at the death. Many blamed Nastasic for that, and it sort of cemented the idea that he was a mistake-maker, but I reckon Hart was probably 70% to blame, and Nastasic 30%.
I was incredibly annoyed at the end of that match. In fact, it prompted me to sign up on here and post my first post (in which I said quite a lot of stupid things, if I remember rightly, establishing my credentials in the process).

Nastasic biggest downfall was that he got way too little time with Komps, because it was during Nastys time here he started getting injured so much. Nastasic was 19 at the time, and really needed a mobile beast of a defender and a leader like Kompany next to him. Really struggled with Demichelis and Lescott, who were both slow, and Demichelis was too similiar to Nasty in that they both wanted to sweep up behind a more mobile partner. Demi was better at it because of his experience (after a couple of months playing like a 60 year old)

It didn't last very long but Boateng was world class at his peak.
