37 Away Games Without A Win Run Ends…

Was it 4 2 to us in that Bradford game. Remember as a teenager listening to Brian Clarke reporting from Valley Parade and couldn’t believe we had won. They were top and unbeaten from memory.

Paul Stewart got a hattrick but one was taken away for a deflection after the game, so he had to wait until the Hudds game.

Varadi was the only player with a hattrick until that point v Stoke, the only 3-0 home hattrick after that took 21 years, Robinho v Stoke again.

Must have done 30 of those games but missed this one, and then Bradford away in the league as well FFS.
Had an evening job while in college.
Should've known City would be cruel after that....for a couple of decades anyway
The only home match I missed all that season we won 10-1.... didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I heard the result

On this day (6 Oct) in 1987 our run of 37 away games without a win came to an end At Wolves

Story here:

We turned up in our thousands game after game hoping we’d be there when the run came to an end. Of course, once we’d won in the League Cup it then became about winning away in the League and we kept torturing ourselves, though didn’t have much longer to wait.

When I think back to how things were at times in the 80s (and then late 90s) I can’t help but feel proud of us fans. From 1983 onwards we made City something positive for us. Our camaraderie was incredible and, together with the development of that 86 FA Youth Cup winning team, this is what City was about. No matter what negative stuff Swales, his supporting directors & Bernard threw at us (the threats to increase fencing, abuse when they tried to pass the blame for the club’s problems on fans etc.) we stayed strong in our support.

Many of us used to separate the ownership etc. from our club. We supported the team, the players and each other, knowing this was our club.
Must have been to 30+ of those games and as usual missed the money shot!!!

Don’t know for sure if this is true but my mate always used to reckon that the first leg of this tie was the only time City ever lost a game at Maine Road to a 4th Division team.

What I do know was it was pretty much the game that did for Eric Nixon’s City career.

My other recollection was that Wolves had rioted at Scarborough on the first day of the season and were on a ban for away fans. But they’d come down earlier in the week and the ticket office had happily sold them about a thousand for the North Stand.

I used to think that too. It certainly was at its height but since then had lots of travelling Blues from 70s/early 80s talk about 79-80. My first away game wasn’t until Stoke 81 unfortunately.
79-80? I'm amazed to hear that. My first away game was around the same as you and I went to quite a few in the early 80s. It certainly wasn't sung on The Kippax at that time and the first time i remember the song being sung with any gusto away was when we drew 0-0 with Everton in 1987. It was being sung all match that day.

Missed the Wolves Cup game through work but it was typical of City's unpredictability that the two games that book-ended the League run were a 2-0 win at Spurs who finished 3rd that season and the 4-2 at Bradford who were top and unbeaten. In between we lost matches to some really poor teams. The pits was probably a 4-0 hammering at Leicester, who were relegated with us.

My Dark times indeed. My first game was 86 v Coventry in the FAC (1-1), sat in the N Stand. Scoreboard wasn't working even then ;-)

When I look back how far we've come...

I remember it being sung often at away games in 1986 and 1987 but I had several going on about it in 79-80. When I get chance I’ll go through my stuff from fans about that period. Some talked of a specific game… in my head it’s against WBA but I do know that the home game with them around this time (it’s something I found when researching the Barnes book) Swales Out and a demo took place.
