#47 | Phil Foden - 2020/21 Performances

It's weird how much stick he gets from Pep in interviews about his positioning. Yet, he is one of our most efficient and important players at the age of 20. Imagine how important he'll be when he learns Pep's system.
Not in the first half he wasn't, as pep said we couldn't control them in the first half because phil wasn't in the right places, not something the football fan sees on telly, but if pep thinks it's right who are we to question, also I think it's a mind game, foden will be buzzin after that performance pep is bringing him back down with a big bump

Will it dawn on Sancho that Foden may become the better player and have the better career due to his patience and willingness to learn from the best manager and train with the best players?

Foden is already starting for one of the best teams in the world and is winning big trophies (2 league titles already, hopefully a 3rd is coming). Sancho may achieve such things one day or may not.

Started to think what type of player Phil would have been now had Sancho stayed. Would his time have been limited more, would he have played more centrally and less time on the wings.
Class always shines through, but it would have had an impact

Don’t think Pep was too impressed with Foden first half, but to be fair to him, he will never have played in that position before. Nothing wrong that that neither, Pep’s got high standards and obviously thinks there’s a high ceiling for Phil.

‘But he’s so young, still he doesn’t understand in some positions what you have to do. In the first half he was not in the right positions as you have to be like we work but he’s a little bit distracted sometimes in these issues.

‘Playing wide is easier for him but he will learn. after that the action for the second and fourth goal what a huge talent he is but still so young and hopefully he understands he can improve.

‘In the first half he was not in the positions we needed and that’s why we suffered in some moments to have the control.’

Second half though, Foden was brilliant. Think that was the game where he’s fully established himself as a leading name at the club now. Anyone thinks of City around the world now and Foden will be one of the first players anyone thinks of.

But I think Pep wants Foden to understand multiple roles, not because he wants him to play there eventually, but to make sure he has a full understanding of what each role is to make his eventual forward role (whatever that ends up being) better because he knows what everyone else should be doing.

So you have a great young talent at your club. He’s local. He bleeds blue. He’s been playing left wing at an incredible level.

Then he shows that he can do it as a false 9 AND makes your subbed right winger look a total amateur in half the time, after moving over to that position.

Does it get any better?
Yeah, when he lifts the Quadruple this year. I love the little slitted-eyebrow genius. Like you said, he's played LW, CAM, False 9 and looked excellent when shifted on the right. Where does Pep see his future? He can do whatever he wants.

He is already the better player, in my view.

I’ll never forget watching his performances at the Under 17 World Cup.
Player of the Tournament and justified.
I told a dipper then to watch out for him. I was probably ignored until yesterday
The dipper banged on about how England only won it due to Brewsters goals.
Fast forward Feb 2021 - I rest my case m’lud.

He was player of the tournament by a mile. Clearly, you were spot on.
I listened to Gareth Southgate, recently, who described him as the country's best player since he was 14.

Just watching MOTD back again. I know it’s a fourth goal against our recent closest rivals, I know it’s a worldy; but the thing that’s just stuck out to me most - every single player, including Ederson, was straight over to him to celebrate with him.

I can only assume that the rest of the squad recognise how special and important he is. He seems really well liked as well.

Expect some form of PL statement about not distancing our celebrations ;) lol :|

He’s such a special footballer.

I don't think Robertson got close enough to him for his first touch but after that it was just a great take. He shifted the ball to his left and got such a sweet shot off so quickly that I genuinely don't think that there's anything that could have been done. Robertson actually managed to read it and went for the block but the movement and shot were so quick and fluid that he didn't stand a chance.

Reminded me of Steph Curry, the way he created the space and got the shot off so quickly.
