Gazza liked to carry the ball and was not known for passing to team mates unless as a last resort.
The modern pressing game is not just about allowing less time on the ball but swarming making it harder to carry the ball and and closing down passing options. Space is at a premium and teams set traps to restrict supply and options.
No doubt Gazza would always show flashes of brilliance but the game has changed and he would need more awareness and discipline as well as work harder to fit in a Pep side.
Much as I appreciated Gazza as a player, equally there are now times I just marvel at watching City play. Phil Foden has it all. Gazza was of a different era so comparisons are difficult.
So what stopped him from ever playing for a top club?

Phil was on fire on the LW. Pinpoint crosses, drifts in and takes on his man, almost scored, has it all.
The problem is that he can play anywhere and be amazing, but he is our best on the LW so he will play there, we have others who can only play in the midfield.
Yeah no doubt he started brilliantly then got a bit quiet. Should have had a goal and assist on top of his assist to Raz.
how about his delivery from corners though? He puts a beautiful ball in.

Even when others play reasonably well on the left, the minute he's back in that position you see everything we miss without him there. Has to play there, nobody else can offer anywhere near the same level of threat.
