Phil always does it in the big games, cup finals, Cl semi-final and quarters, Liverpool, United etc. He should be the first name on the team sheet. Southgate seems to dislike him even in his tone of voice when answering questions about Phil from the media. He has made snide digs about his best position. I don't know what Southgate's problem is, perhaps it stems from the Iceland incident.

Southgate feels threatened by real talent instead of embracing and using it imo.

Deep down he is so fucking unimaginative and frightened for his job .

I am no expert on what makes a player world class rather than very good. But to a man, ex professionals all mark Phil out as very special. I can see he is an excellent player, but what is it that these professionals all see that places him above his contemporaries?

No chance Foden starts against Senegal , waistcoat will revert to type and play Mount or Saka and will be ecstatic if it is 0-0 after 80 minutes and we are still in the game , then we will either scrape a 1-0 from a set piece or go to penalties.
A leopard doesnt change its spots and Waistcoat is wasting a generation of talent in preference for boring , turgid football in the important games.
The annoying thing is if we do beat Senegal we have the players to beat France , because we have the superior and more talented players , this wil never be realised under a shit scared F.A. yes man manager

His off the pitch exploits, obviously.

Still wasted out wide in an England shirt, needs to be seeing as much as the ball as possible.

Don’t have the necessary hi-tech skills to stick on a picture, but blimey that cat’s pretty much his double

Allright. But if Pep was picking a team for a QF against France would he Overthink and fuck up?

Many of the top ranked sides are out. Plenty have lost games and/or scraped through. We won the group comfortably and scored 9 goals in the process. We're doing alright. Ours was the hardest group in terms of world rankings (not the most reliable system admittedly).

That's the second time Phil has played well for England. Clearly Gareth doesn't feel the World Cup is the best stage to try Phil in a number 10 role. Arguably he should have tried it in the NL or qualifying but he doesn't believe it's Phil's best position and we have other options. I think he will play him against Senegal but against France I wouldn't be surprised if we went back to a back 5 and played with more pace on the counter rather than people who can dominate the ball. It's only the wrong system if we lose.

The run to the Euro's included a win over Germany, a battering of the Ukraine and then a nice tense ET win over Denmark. Only the final was turgid but that was after another glorious start where we sank into our defensive shells and he wasn't proactive. That's just who he is. But he's been better than anyone else we've had. If we win with a set piece then we win the game. Job done. Portugal won the Euro's playing absolutely shite, drawing all three group games and then going to ET or penalties. The best players and best managers don't always win tournaments - that's why City haven't won the CL yet.

I've just looked on football 365 and can see 3 articles about "Mason Mount is underrated." Underrated now clearly the modern codeword for shit.

Some **** thinks if you don't like mason mount then you don't "think" about football.

He brags how he oh so sneakily tweeted about how average foden was in the first half against Wales, just as average as mount in previous games. (Slightly missing the point with it not being a fucking 45 minute game you cleft as Foden proved in the 2nd half.)

Sure, mount provides no goals or assists, but to be fair he does occasionally lazily chase back or misplace a pass so he does do something. He's literally Danny Drinkwater 2.0. he's not half the player without prime Kante next to him doing the work of two people and that's clear from his performances for Chelsea this year.

if Southgate starts him over foden we deserve everything we get.
