Southgate on Phil:

'But sometimes the discussion around just plopping him in as a 10 in every game isn't realistic because first you need the ball and there are defensive responsibilities that he isn't given at his club.

'From the wide area it is different, the responsibility is different, the role is different. At 10, you have to cover a lot more ground and be aware of the spaces without the ball. If that bit of pressure isn't right then they are through you and into your back line.

'That is why we didn't put him in as a 10 against the US. There are games where there isn't that same tactical challenge in midfield. There might be a little bit more freedom and that might be the slot he can use to express himself. But his club don't do that either, so there must be a reason for it. But he is a great option for us in two or three different positions and he will have a big impact in games.

So despite the fact Phil has played 6 times in midfield for him, because he doesn't play for us in midfield he will not be considered. I certainly haven't noticed Phil shirking defensive responsibilities either. I wonder what the reason he doesn't play in midfield for his club is? Maybe because he is competing against three of the best midfielders in world football you friggin muppet.
Also totally ignores the fact that he could have put him on wide left for Sterling or wide right for Saka when he made those stupid subs on 70 minutes.

The man's a clown.

The Southgate claim about him not playing as a 10 for his club totally ignores the fact he played a lot of last season as a false 9, basically a 10 without a forward ahead of you. One of those games the highest pressure A Madrid away, where he was targeted throughout

He's bonkers. Not sure why he think Phil doesn't have defensive responsibilities either. Our whole game is based on possession of the ball and winning it back as soon as it is lost, every player has the responsibility to do that.
Phil is one of our best pressers from a forward position. This is a defensive duty, but Southgate doesn't have the football intelligence to recognize this. He sees defensive contribution as tackling in his own half.

To be fair, Pep said that he needs to work on more things to be fully prepared to move centrally long term too.

Thought he was great tonight.

Big game player is our Phil

this is the edge he has over Saka and Sterling , which is why he must start from now on

but he won’t cos Southgate

first half he was a bit starved of possession. Yes Hendo we are pointing at you you donkey. What he did, he did well though. Pressing was excellent as always. Yes Waistcoat we are pointing at you you fuckwit.
Second half much more involved and had a chance to show his class. He should start any game before sakho, sterling, mount. He really should be one of the first picks and would be for any other country but our. Yes Waistcoat we are pointing at you you fuckwit.

Southgate talks about him as if he is still a child. He’s 22 years old with consummate football skills that only Grealish in the England squad comes close to.
If Southgate drops him for one of his favourites and Senegal beat us on Sunday he’s finished & deservedly so
I fully expect Phil to start for only this reason

I assume he played the full game because he isn't likely to see significant minutes for the rest of the tournament.

I understand Southgate's stance, even if I disagree with him. He's just a very conservative manager.

He starts the next game because he was the best player on the pitch against Wales and there would be no justification whatsoever to be left out regardless of how conservative Southgate is.

They have one of the longest breaks of any team in the tournament now (4 days) so I imagine it was more to do with the fact he'd only got 15 mins vs. Iran wheras someone like Saka and Mount have still played more across the first 2 games.

Well Mount was on the pitch longer, not sure I would use the word
" played " to describe his performance.

Phil always does it in the big games, cup finals, Cl semi-final and quarters, Liverpool, United etc. He should be the first name on the team sheet. Southgate seems to dislike him even in his tone of voice when answering questions about Phil from the media. He has made snide digs about his best position. I don't know what Southgate's problem is, perhaps it stems from the Iceland incident.
