47 | Phil Foden - 2024/25

There is still a lot of covid around and we know you can have a couple of good days and bang you are flat on your back again for a while , so it might be that, whatever it is he is entitled to keep his medical problems private . We like to think that they get paid well so we are entitled to know everything about them

Yep, I back Pep’s judgement over any player. Pep has an incredible sense for what he needs to do to either get the best out of someone, keep them on the straight and narrow, whatever it may be. And typically, with rare exceptions, he will protect the player in public and tell whatever white lie has has to tell. The only time I remember him not doing that was with Kalvin Phillips when he publically said he was overweight. Then he later apologised for saying it. But generally speaking, Pep is excellent when it comes to protecting the players from whatever has really gone on.

Nothing reinforces my faith in Pep’s nose than the way he bounced Sancho out of the club immediately, and the lad was just an academy player.

Immediately knew he was a bad apple and has been proven correct since.

He’s had a couple of brain farts in signing Mendy and Philips but he’s right a lot more than he’s wrong.

No doubt in my mind it was something more than an 'illness'. Hopefully sorts himself out pronto, we need him!
Two different people have told me they've seen him playing 5 a side down at Reddish in the last month or so.

I called bull shit on the first guy that told me, and then a completely unrelated person told me the same story a few weeks later.

Both mentioned he played in a white balaclava.

So not convinced its illness or injury!

What is he, the Stig?

Good to see him in the side from the start tonight. Let’s hope this is the start of his season proper now.

Last season I thought his challenge was to score more goals and replace what we were missing with Mahrez leaving. He went from 16, 14 and 15 goals in the previous three seasons to scoring 27 last season.

His challenge this season is to start being more creative. Last season three defensive midfielders (Rodri, Rice and Groß) and two players who played half the number of games as Phil (de Bruyne and Neto) had more assists than Foden in the Prem.

He’s also not very creative at all from central attacking mid with just four assists in all competitions from there all last season.

He lacks link-up play with Haaland when he plays in central attacking mid as well. Watch back some of the games from previous seasons where he played centrally and there are games where there isn’t a single pass to each other between Foden and Haaland.

He stepped up is goals last season, let’s see him take that next step up and add more creativity to his game, especially centrally (he is much more creative when playing wide, to be fair to him).

If he does this and carries it on over subsequent seasons with higher goals and assists together, he’ll be the complete player.
