If injuries continue to dog him and his availability continues to be so uncertain, then I just can’t see him remaining. Always thought he’d bow out at the same time as Bernardo.

He might not be starting every week but just like Kompany I'm pretty sure he's gonna be here as long as he plays at the top level when he's fit. It's a position where every squad has 4/5 players, you can carry an injury prone veteran when they're Stones' quality.

True. However, we'll still have Dias, Akanji, Gvardiol, and Ake all under contract, as well as Khusanov and Reis to accommodate.

So loads and loads of cover and versatile players who play across the backline.
So perhaps less need for Stones. I can understand the arguments for retaining and understand the arguments for allowing to walk at the end of his contract. More concerned with having him fit to play in the remaining months.

He comes from Barnsley, he plays in Blue and White, he hates the Germans he thinks that they’re not nice, he breaks their spirit, everywhere he goes, his name is Johnny, Johnny, Johnny Stones.

I managed to adapt his song so I can sing it next time I’m at the game. Boy will I practice that!! :-) :-)
Be a bit weird to sing that against Madrid though.

You could say the same about Dias and Ake. For me his leadership, talent and experience is enough, even with injuries

6 months of stones being fit can make the difference in us winning a trophy
Ake for sure. Not dias

But this is the problem. Being world class isnt just about performances on the pitch, its being reliable and smashing it weekly, monthly, yearly.

And much as i love the guy, his injury record blot his copy book

In our new 235 setup, id like to see John tried as the CDM when our other CBs are fit.

He is perfect for being thr midfielder who can drop between the CBs and make a pseudo back 3, freeing Kova to be more of a 6/8 rather than pure 6.

Also will rest the legs of Kova and Gundo a bit more, we dont need to play both of them anymore and can just rotate.

Would almost be interested in a sort of 541 (in rest defense, although back 5s are not Peps thing for being passive in pressing) where the wingbacks push up AND Stones as the centre CB pushes up next to the 2 CMs, to create the 235
