6 | Nathan Ake - 2023/24

He's normally very solid, one mistake like that doesn't do him in.

He needs to move on from it and not let it affect him.
It speaks volumes for his character that having gifted our title rivals an equaliser with a horrendous error and handed the momentum to them in our toughest game of the season he was able to instantly put it behind him and deliver a rock solid performance thereafter.

He’s in my first 11 every week.

Total fuck up today, everyone is allowed one or two a season but that’s deffo one gone now
cost us 2 points vs Spurs at home beating in the air at the last minutes. Cost us another 2 points vs Liverpool this time. Cost us 3 points vs Wolves.

Funny part is that Ake is still regarded to have a good season. just showing how poor our defending standards come this season... The others have made even more mistakes.

But it is difficult to criticize Ake. He suffered with current formation and lack of protection. We should seriously consider to buy a pacy left back to hold the width and protect Ake and Josko when the opposition has good right wingers. They are exposed by pacy wingers and it will only get worse.

I feel like these two thoughts are related. Yes, there have been uncharacteristic individual mistakes but I also think the risk/reward equation of the current formation has perhaps been riskier this season - although I suppose we need to wait till the end of the season to know if it was worth it.

Yea that Spurs game was a bit of a nightmare but Dias was at fault at Wolves

No he wasn't. Ake didn't manage to stay with Neto, and he went past Ake, which resulted in a 1 on 1 situation with Ederson. Dias tried to block Neto's shot with a tackle and that resulted in an unfortunate deflection and an own goal. He was saving a near certain goal already, so whereas it was unfortunate, it was not his fault. Ake created the situation. A bit like the Ederson incident and the pen. Both Ederson and Dias could have done better, but it's on Ake.

Cost us at Arsenal and against Crystal Palace as well. That's 5 games together, yet people always excuse him. He is a great defender, but makes mistakes just like the rest and is definitely not above our other defenders.

It’s always a bit weird when one poster decides a player hasn’t got enough stick and takes it upon themselves to right things.
