18 goals already. Hardly a shadow of the previous 2 seasons, given that he has scored more goals at this point of the season than in any other season so far. IIRC, he scored 24 and 26 goals in the last 2 seasons. He might go above 30 this season. Hope he continues to be a shadow like that. Imagine if he wasn't a shadow. He would have scored 50 goals already.
My entire post was about his general play. His goal scoring is a different aspect of football. We as a team have scored a similar number of goals as last season but we’re nowhere near as good as a team as we were last season. We aren’t playing as well or fast or slick as the previous two years. Everything has been a bit ‘off’. I think the same of Sterling as an individual player I his general play.

This I agree with. Scoring goals is still quite important though. If Sterling stays fit, he can score 30+ goals in all compets which will be an excellent achievement, especially given that he doesn't take any pens and free kicks.

I think some of you are overrating Sterling's performances from the previous 2 seasons somewhat. He had the same issues in those years that he didn't do too much bar scoring; still made the same errors with poor decision making; and still struggled to contribute when needed. He had the odd super performance like the 6-0 against Chelsea but not much more. Similar to this season.

The important thing for me last season and this one was that he was trying more to do something and hiding less in games. I've constantly praised him for showing increasing maturity in his performances and I believe they've continued into this season. For me the major difference between this season and last season is that last season we had this absolutely phenomenal side that covered everyone's weaknesses and this year a few players are being forced into doing more than they had to previously which is showing off some deficiencies; Gundogan and Bernardo being the biggest victims. Also our lack of attacking fluency in general is probably making him attempt more things he wouldn't have previously done, which is only making him look worse.

I'm not saying his performances are at the highest they can be or the level they should be. We've seen in games like against Atalanta and the 2nd half v Liverpool what he can really do. He needs to do this more, yes (although he's not alone by any stretch). However I think it's unfair we compare him to yesteryear when in my opinion he HASN'T regressed and in fact has improved on the best and arguably most important feature of his game, goalscoring.

Arguably our worst performer this evening. He shouldn’t be starting every league game over the busy festive period. Unfortunately we are over reliant on him in Sane’s absence.

He has gone a little backwards this year, because he hadn’t adapted to the attention he is receiving.

He needs to get his head up more, so he can take a crack, or play a 1-2, rather than trying to bundle his way through defenses.

He is definitely up there with the most dangerous attackers in the League, but when you compare him to the likes of Vardy and Salah, just purely on finishing, it shows how much growth potential he has.

Him and Jesus are two peas in a pod. A lot of the good stuff they do is off the ball and their interchanging movement is a delight.

Sterling had patches in this game where he was an absolute menace. Both he and Mahrez blew hot and cold but that could be argued is the nature of the role. His work ethic nor attitude couldn't be questioned.
