Why does he have to be either world class or Dogshit with no in between? can he not just be a very good player who had a below par season for his own standards?
I think it's because we have seen him at a world class level before, even if relatively briefly.

Are you talking about all those poor and average seasons he had when he was 21 and under. How poor must he have been to get a £50m transfer at the age of 20? At the start of the Centurions season - the real next level season with City, he was 22.

Someone was talking up Grealish (who I think is a great player) up above. When he turned 21 he had a grand total of 1 (one) senior goal.

He made his premier league debut and England debut at the age of 17, he was pretty poor then too)

He’s the hero today. All the back pages tomorrow will have his face plastered all over them and he will rightly be being praised for a good 90 mins.
It’s only on here where his performances are dissected to such a degree by a couple of posters that his match winning contribution is secondary to a couple of poor shots and over hit passes.
Made up for him.

My thoughts exactly.

Imagine what it’d be like if he’d had a game like Kane

I think this sums it up.. if you asked all 4 Croatian defenders and the keeper after the game who they were most concerned about during the game... they would all say Sterling.

I saw a lot of posts in the thread before the match about how he should have been "nowhere near the team" and Southgate picking him would guarantee England do badly.

Surprisingly, I haven't seen any posts after full time saying they were wrong.

What part is hard to conclude on world-class over the last 4 seasons and I am only using goals because I am too lazy to go and find the full assist stat but we know that it is high as well.

World-class strikers would be proud of those figures.
We are judging him and should be judging him on being a clutch player in the big games and sadly most of us would not want to see him in any of those games.
The stats suggest he is a reliable goalscorer and assister which he has been in 2 seasons however can anyone confidently say he will score a sitter or a 1v1 without doubting that he will. We are at a point where we are not surprised if he misses an open goal 3 yards out aka Lyon or the fact he is so hopeless when he is 1v1 and these are not doubts we should be having for a player of his supposed calibre. Adding to that he has been embarrassing trying to beat a man this season running into them or over running the ball, basic things a “world class” player should be doing.

To clarify I used to be a big Sterling supporter willing him to do well and believe he would go from strength to strength with age instead of regressing. It is just difficult to ever see him reach a level where you can consider him reliable.

in saying all of that, his comments recently suggest something might have been going on behind the scenes which has not helped whatever that may be. I would happily admit i am wrong if he kicks on again this season but at the moment and for the last 2 years he has been disrupting the flow of our team and not fitting in to the style, he just has nowhere near the required level of technical ability.

You must be joking. His passing was poor, he miscontrolled repeatedly. He did however give it his all and he won the game by as so often for us being in the right place at the right time.
But Mount, Phillips, Ming's, Walker and even Foden while on the pitch played better.
Walker was shite, are you joking ?
