He is a very good player but he wasn’t bought to fill Ilkay’s boots. Who could? Pep doesn’t buy replacements, he gets players in who can fit the system, whatever that will be in future. He also improves them.

Quality player, very comfortable in possession in tight spaces and I'm confident he will prove to be an excellent signing.

Looked fantastic, incredible at weaving through presses. Was almost disappointed when he got subbed off. Looking forward to his performances for the rest of the season.

didnt look out of place which is great compared some need a full year before they look the part.

Think in an attacking team such as ours he will excel in a deeper position, not sure he’s best suited as an 8

could work being next to Phil or KDB but with Alvarez we lacked a bit of creative vision

i also think him a Grealish on the same side doesn’t work, no one running in behind

Gundogan had 4 seasons at City before he broke into a 10 goal season in all competitions, playing ~50 games in 3 of those 4 seasons.

Pep clearly has a knack of improving players into something they weren't necessarily known for, so I wouldn't be too surprised to see Mateo pop up with a share of goals this season.
